Samsung’s Bixby Assistant Reportedly Based On S Voice

Recent reports have suggested that the Galaxy S8 is going to come with an Artificial Intelligence Virtual assistant called Bixby. The rumors started when Samsung announced that it had acquired Viv Labs, an AI company owned by the creators of Siri. Many believe that Bixby is going to be based on the technology of the company it acquired recently but according to a new report, Bixby is actually based on Samsung’s existing voice command service, S Voice.

The folks at Viv Labs have a lot of experience with creating artificial intelligence virtual personal assistants. They were behind Siri after all, Apple acquired the assistant and took it from there, but it was the team at Viv Labs that put it all together in the first place.

When Samsung announced the acquisition of Viv Labs, it was automatically assumed that the target company would be looking after Samsung’s virtual personal assistant ambitions, but a new report from The Wall Street Journal claims that this is not going to be the case.

Bixby is reportedly going to be based on S Voice, a service that Samsung introduced on its flagship smartphones several years ago. It did seem promising at first but Samsung sort of forgot about it and it fell behind the likes of Siri and Google Now.

If that’s really true, many would have started to adjust their expectations with respect to Bixby considering that Samsung’s S Voice service still leaves a lot to be desired.
