Download Mode is basically a built-in function that comes from Samsung to allow you complete freedom to use your phone, update it, downgrade it, use ROM packs, and even test your own ROMs on the device. Although you would need a side app called ODIN to be installed on your PC, but that’s not a big deal. Download Mode comes in handy when you want to connect your phone with ODIN, root your device or install custom recovery or any other updates or system tweaks. Getting your device into Download Mode is no big deal, but we still get questions from many readers on how to do it. In case your phone is not detected by your computer at all, please make sure you have all the Galaxy J7 USB drivers installed.

What is Download Mode / ODIN Mode?
Samsung is one of the very few manufacturers selling their phone’s boot-loader unlocked. This allows you to flash any sort of firmware without the extra frustration of unlocking the boot-loader first. ODIN mode and Download mode are two different words referring to the same thing.
ODIN mode is named after the partner software it requires to flash firmwares which is called ODIN – Download ODIN v3.09. This program is very diverse and has multiple functions. For instance, you can not only install an official firmware but you can flash root packages as well. As the program has access to phone’s crucial partitions, it is not meant to be experimented with. Small mistakes can cause various parts of the phone to malfunction. This is why it is recommended that you follow a tutorial if you are doing this for the first time.
The upgrades are one thing but you can downgrade your phone as well. This comes in handy when a newer update is causing you problems and the previous firmware was just fine. It can be considered as a restore point however your data is lost in any case.
There is no harm in simply accessing or checking the Download mode but once you flash an unverified package or firmware, your Samsung warranty gets void. Custom firmwares, root packages and custom recoveries are some of the things you should keep away from if you don’t want to lose your warranty. All our guides mention this one drawback before actually giving you the steps.

If you are entering the download mode on Samsung Galaxy J7 smartphones for flashing a custom recovery, getting root access or applying official updates, you should backup the device data before doing those tasks. You can use the Helium app from the Google Play Store to help backing up your device. Common data found on your devices which you might like to back up include your phone contacts, SMS and MMS text messages, pictures, videos and music files. You don’t often lose this data automatically; however, you will lose that data if you want to apply a factory reset to recovery your device. Needing to recovery the Samsung galaxy J7 smartphone is always a possibility when you are tinkering with the operating system which is why we recommend you take the backup now.
Those of you connecting to a computer and using the Odin flashing tool for flashing files will also need to enable the USB Debugging Mode. In short, the USB Debugging Mode is a special mode you can turn on and off from your settings. With it off your device cannot communicate properly with programs via USB cable and connected to the computer. To fix that just head over to the Menu > Settings > Developer Options > USB Debugging Mode.

Turn off your Galaxy J7 device — do that by pressing the Power key once and then selecting the “Switch Off” option from the display. Alternatively, you can long-press the Power key and wait until it switches off. Just make sure it is all the way off and not sleeping or else the next step will not work.
Reboot the J7 by holding the Power + Volume Down + Home keys.
Keep holding those three keys until the screen changes and you see some yellow text with a yellow warning triangle beneath the text.
Now press the Volume Up button from that screen and your device will boot into the download mode ready to connect to the PC.
