President Obama Orders Full Review of Russian Hacking Activities During US Election

President Obama has ordered US intelligence agencies to conduct a full review of Russia’s hacking activities during the recent elections and come up with a list of “lessons learned” from the Kremlin’s cyber-campaign.

The intelligence review will cover everything from the recent DNC hacks and leaked emails of John Podesta, who chaired Hillary Clinton’s campaign, to hacking activity during Obama’s own 2008 campaign. The Clinton campaign emails, which were published by Wikileaks, proved damaging to her reputation, raising uneasy questions about her ties to Wall Street.

The Obama administration publicly accused Russia of attempting to interfere in America’s recent presidential election, stating that it was “”confident that the Russian Government directed the recent compromises of e-mails from U.S. persons and institutions, including from U.S. political organizations.”

President-elect Donald Trump, on the other hand, has repeatedly questioned whether any malicious hacks ever occurred, suggesting that the accusations were motivated by political considerations.

“We may have crossed a new threshold here,” Lisa Monaco, homeland security adviser to Obama, said. “It is incumbent upon us to take stock of that, to review, to conduct some after action, to understand what this means, what has happened and to impart those lessons learned, and that’s what we’re going to go about doing.”

It remains to be seen whether the conclusions of the intelligence report will remain confidential, or whether an official de-classified version will be released.
