After the California Department of Motor Vehicles ordered Uber to stop testing self driving cars until they got a license, Uber decided to ship out their vehicles. 

Uber’s self driving cars were shipped to Arizona on trucks on 22 December. The DMV withdrew the registration for the cars, and Uber was careful not to show the registration area of the plates in the pictures they sent out of media. 

When the DMV said Uber needed a license, Uber promised to continue operations without one. That was when the DMV had only promised to take legal action. Withdrawing the registration for the cars meant they could not be used on the roads. Instead of just applying for the license, Uber decided to leave instead. 

Uber received support from Arizona. Doug Ducey, the Governor for Arizona, said in a statement “While California puts the brakes on innovation and change with more bureaucracy and more regulation, Arizona is paving the way for new technology and new businesses”.

The cars left in trucks built by Otto. Otto is an Uber subsidiary building self driving trucks.
