Despite calls from California’s Department of Motor Vehicles Uber has decided to keep its self Driving Cars on the road.
The authorities called out Uber to stop self driving cars, until they apply for a permit. Uber responded by keeping their cars on the road, and promising to keep it that way indefinitely.
In its defence, Uber says the cars are monitored and the law should not apply. Humans can always take over the driving in case of emergence, which Uber claims should exempt it. California’s Office of the Attorney General will take none of that, issuing a warning letter to them.
Other companies interested is self driving cars have obtained the necessary permits. This includes the likes of BMW, Google, Tesla and Honda. According to the Department, the permits are strictly for safety. And the law applies to the technology, not specific vehicles.
This is a classic example of Uber logic as far as authorities are concerned. First, they deploy their business, then discuss the permits later. We have seen Uber pay various fines for unlicensed operations. But not once do they falter in their model.
