Hackers Already Exploiting the Windows Vulnerability Exposed By Google

Google recently made public a Vulnerability in Windows, 10 days after telling Microsoft. A hacking group linked to Russia, Fancy Bear, is already exploiting the vulnerability. And Microsoft is not amused.

Known more widely as Fancy Bear, Microsoft calls the Russian-linked group STRONTIUM. The group has “aggressive, persistent tactics and techniques, and its repeated use of new zero-day exploits to attack its targets,” according to a report on the group issued last year by Microsoft. STRONTIUM has been around since at least 2007. And it’s currently among the top cyber-threats.

STRONTIUM’s targets are primarily high-profile. This included government agents, journalists, activists and the like. Their attacks are mainly focused on access to sensitive information. The group is persistent, and can follow through an attack for over a year until they get their business done.

It is in Google’s DNA to release unpatched vulnerabilities. Two years ago, the company reported about an unpatched Windows 8.1 security glitch and was later slammed by Microsoft for revealing details about another Windows 8.1 vulnerability before it was patched.
