Do you use Google Keep yet? Competing iOS notes app adds even more functionality

Tags: notes app

Google rolled out its Keep note-taking app with a relative lack of fanfare in September 2015, but in what is something of an opposite approach to Apple, Google launched quietly but developed fast. Keep’s latest update is now just as sweet on iOS as Apple’s own Notes App. Take a look at what’s new and see if it’s worth making the switch…

Okay, so the initial concept for Keep is that it takes a far more post-it note style approach than other notes apps. Popular note-taking apps like Evernote are perfect for the file-away-for-later approach – and you can read our guide as to why you should install Evernote here – whereas Apple’s own notes app sits somewhere in between, allowing you to quickly take notes to refer back to later. But for storing images, documents and other bits and pieces, it’s far from perfect.

Keep, on the other hand, recognizes that an organized set of notes doesn’t equal an organized mind. Instead, the best approach is to dump notes that require relatively imminent referral into the app. For example, a shopping list (which you can add a location-based reminder too – for example, pulling up the list right when you get to the store), or a quick to-do for later, which you can add a timer to. You can also sync and share lists with family members.

Keep was great for quickly adding notes, but is even better now thanks to its auto-categorization features

However, in its latest update, Keep has introduced a new feature that “automagically” creates topics for grouping notes. For example, the app will instantly place notes together based on places, books, travel, food, and more. While some might say this is driving it more towards the more complex solutions like Evernote, the simplicity and lack of user organization makes this a great addition to an already developing notes app.

Fancy giving Keep a try? Download it on Apple’s App Store now.
