Welcome to #277 – a note from the editor

Hey there readers! Hoo boy, have we got a packed issue for you.

WWDC, which would usually be Apple’s second-biggest event in a given year, just made a pretty strong case for being the biggest event in a generation – depending on how you feel about the prospect of “spatial computing,” that is.

If you’ve been under a rock this past week, you’ll have missed the launch of Apple Vision Pro, an augmented reality headset that offers a glimpse into the future of computing. But that’s not all that was announced at WWDC23 – we also got full previews of iOS 17, iPadOS 17, watchOS 10, and macOS Sonoma. Plus all the winners and runners-up from this year’s Apple Design Awards. You’ll want to head over to the News section for full details on all of the above. Phew.

Oddly enough, any thought of Apple allowing users to sideload apps – as mandated by the EU – was conspicuous by its absence at WWDC. Head to the Features section for three reasons why that might be. And if you’re curious about Apple’s augmented future, head to Reviews for a roundup of some of the best AR apps that are already available on iPhone and iPad. They might not have the razzle-dazzle of Vision Pro, but you won’t have to wait six months or drop $3499 to check them out.

Beyond all that WWDC stuff, we’ve got the latest in our Toolkit series (Navigate the World) and a surprisingly entertaining Calculators roundup. Plus a Space Invaders retrospective, a look at ChatGPT for iPhone, and what to do now Apple is shutting off My Photo Stream.

Enjoy, and we’ll see you next time!
