Gift an app: how to check and resend digital gifts

You may already be familiar with the fact that you can send apps or games to people as gifts. It’s pretty easy to do – find something you like the look of on the App Store and hit the  button, followed by Gift app. Then simply enter in the email you wish you send the app to, confirm and pay for the purchase, and you’re done! The other person will receive an email with a code that can be redeemed in the App Store for your chosen gift.

Specific apps can make for a more thoughtful present than an iTunes gift card, and as more media goes digital-only we’d expect to see more and more people receiving online gifts in lieu of physical presents to unwrap. But what happens if an app you bought never reaches its intended destination, or the gift code is lost or accidentally deleted? It’s not clear how to track gifts once they’ve been bought, but it is possible. Here’s how to chase up a rogue gift.

Resending a gift

First, open up the Settings app and select iTunes & App Stores. Then press your email address at the top of the menu and choose View Apple ID. You’ll need to authenticate your identity to proceed, as the next screen contains lots of secure personal information.

Once you’re in, press the Gifts button to see a full history of all the gifts you’ve sent from your Apple ID, with the most recent at the top.

You can tap any one of the gifts for more information, such as the price paid and the personal message you sent.If the gift has been successfully redeemed, there will be no way to interact with this information. But if the code has not yet been used, you can press Resend Gift to send the email again. Don’t worry, you won’t be charged again.

You can also change the email address used by tapping the Recipient section, in case you entered the wrong email address first time around and need to amend this before resending.

Note that you don’t necessarily have to send the gift to an email associated with an Apple ID, as the receiver will simply get a code that isn’t tied to a particular account until it’s entered on the App Store’s redeem page. Which means you can always try a different email address if the first one really isn’t working.
