Just recently, MTN acquired Visafone together with its 800MHz in a N47.5 billion deal, an investment with a potential to place MTN on the fore front of telecommunication companies in Nigeria.
There were certain controversies that trailed this deal. It was said the acquisition of Visafone would give MTN an unfair advantage over other network providers. MTN already controls about 45% of Nigeria’s telecom market with about 61 million subscribers, the acquisition of Visafone and its 800 MHz gives MTN an opportunity to provide Fourth Generation Long Term Evolution (MTN 4G LTE) services.
It was the belief of some that the approval of this deal by the NCC was not according to international best practices as NCC which is the market regulator seemed to helping a competitor dominate its market space as MTN would now have 800MHz added to its already existing 700MHz. The Nigeria Communication Commission approved the deal in December 2015, and MTN has promised to start serving the MTN 4G LTE in major cities of Nigeria by July 2016 and then expand to other cities.
Etisalat Nigeria tried to engage MTN in a legal battle, but it didn’t seem to yield much. MTN is set to take advantage of this monopoly situation and fast track its operations so that it can start serving the MTN 4G LTE by July, 2016.
You recall that a few months ago Netflix was launched in Nigeria, MTN 4G LTE services would ensure faster and better streaming, better internet services and a whole lot of enormous opportunities.
MTN has promised that the MTN 4G LTE services would be available to subscribers in major cities by July 2016 and expand to the rest of the nation before the end of the first quarter of 2017.
In as much as the circumstances surrounding the acquisition deal seems not to be so transparent, we still love to welcome the MTN 4G LTE services to Nigeria.
