Cocoon: Autonomous Tent Company’s Sustainable Living Concept

The era of Sustainable Living is upon us and modern day architectural firms are taking notice. The Autonomous Tent Company has unveiled a revolutionary design concept called Cocoon – a state-of-the-art eco-tent that can be used as a guest suite, yoga studio, or office space. Engineered as “the world’s first transportable 5-start boutique hotel,” Cocoon is a 700-square-foot architectural marvel designed for off-grid seclusion in remote landscapes.

New Form of Architecture

Using a wooden deck-like platform instead of the standard concrete foundation, the Cocoon is a highly-portable structure that will set you back $100,000. With the exterior constructed from a hard-wearing translucent fabric, Cocoon’s semi-permanent structure can be constructed in just a few days. The mold, rot, and pest resistant shell is 12 feet high and can withstand hurricane-force winds up to 90 mph and heavy snow loads up to 30 psf.

Whether you want a full suite of off-grid technology like solar panels, a solar hot water array, a composting toilet, a grey water system, or a wood-burning stove, the Autonomous Tent Company designed its tent to be a full sustainable dwelling. With a commitment to “landowners and land conservationists” to “leave without a trace,” the Cocoon can generate enough power for “LED lights, pumps, water filters, and a composting system.” Since the Cocoon comes with a bathroom with a shower and kitchenette, you can bring all the luxuries of home to a remote location of your choice.

Sustainable Living Concept

Described in a recent New Atlas article as a “luxurious tent that lets you go off-the-grid in style,” Cocoon offers a flexible layout (split between living room, bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom) and the option to add a full suite of sustainable technology. If the climate is challenging, you can even add an extra layer of insulation protecting you and your guests from the elements. According to the Autonomous Tent Company’s website, their Sustainable Living Concept is perfect for both commercial and residential applications. From gourmet dining experiences and luxury guest suites to yoga studios and cocktail lounges, the intended use is limited only by the users’ imagination.

Since the Autonomous Tent Company designed the Cocoon as a fully sustainable living concept, we came up with the top three devices that could make their revolutionary tent even more eco-friendly – reducing its carbon footprint even further:

LaDouche Hot Water Heater

Designed as a towel warmer and fully mountable on any available bathroom wall space, LaDouche is a modern looking water heater that requires minimal space and avoids gas or fuel heating. Powered by the waste water heat energy, the thermocyclic process consumes 15 kWh of power with just 3,000 watts coming from the socket – saving close to 80% off your electric bill. The mountable stainless steel exchanger allows users to program the exact quantity of water needed per shower. You can also connect to LaDouche’s intuitive app via your smartphone to calibrate its energy consumption.

GrowWall Gardening System

Designed to harvest a full crop of fruits and vegetables in a matter of 4-5 weeks, GrowWall’s starter kit comes with seeds, nutrients, pH adjusters, and EC and pH meters. Capable of growing 75 pesticide-free plants, GrowWall’s vertical design requires 50% less space allowing plants to grow 25% faster than outdoor gardening. According to Opcom’s website, “these environmentally-friendly systems grow with 90% less water usage than outdoor gardening, and your food has zero carbon footprint.” Since GrowWall is a soil-less system and most pesticides absorb into soil, you are guaranteed clean herbs, fruits, and veggies.

Zera Food Recycler

Winner of this year’s coveted CES Best of Innovation Award for Eco-Design and Sustainable Technologies, the Zera Food Recycler takes a week’s worth of your food and transforms it into ready-to-use, homemade fertilizer. WLabs, Whirlpool’s eco-friendly spin-off corporation, has created a revolutionary kitchen recycler that simply outperforms composting on every level imaginable.

Zera can “recycle a week’s worth of food waste within 24 hours through a fully automated process.” By simply pressing a button or connecting to Zera’s intuitive companion app, users are able to grind up 95% of their food (minus bones and pits) and turn it into soil for plants, gardens, lawns, etc. WLabs’ kitchen recycler “reduces food waste by over two-thirds its original volume” and makes instant fertilizer in 24 hours.
