Thanks To Samsung, AMOLED Display Is Now Cheaper Than LCD

samsung-galaxy-s7-vs-iphone-6s-compare-hero-970-80It was bound to happen with the largest smartphone manufacturer backing it. The Amoled displays are now officially cheaper to produce than the LCD counterparts. A 5 inch full HD screen in AMOLED can be manufactured for $14.3 while the same panel in LCD technology costs $14.6. The prices have fallen from $17.1 (AMOLED) and $15.7 (LCD) in the fourth quarter of 2015.

The stage is now set for AMOLED to dominate the smartphone industry with Chinese manufacturers such as oppo, xiaomi and meizu preferring Amoled Displays to LCD ones. Not only the high-end smartphones, mobile in the low end and mid-range are also shifting to AMOLED technology.

These displays have superior advantages to the LCD technology. They are capable of displaying deeper colours all the while being power efficient. One drawback is that they have a smaller life cycle. With this, the AMOLED displays are set to become the standard in the mobile industry and will genuinely replace the LCD technology.

But how did the prices fell so drastically?

The short answer is the high demand. Samsung is the largest player in the display segment and has indicated that increasing the production capacity in the existing factories have helped in reducing the base price of a unit. The high initial cost has now been neutralized and that too helped the AMOLED in becoming cheaper.

The tech industry has one critical question. If AMOLED displays are adopted in every phone, irrespective of the price tag, will that not cannibalize the sale of premium flagships?

That is a genuine concern. For this exact reason, manufacturers such as Apple and Samsung are shifting their focus on ultra-high end OLED display panel and flexible displays to maintain the differentiation from the non-premium smartphones.

Apple is also rumoured to include the OLED display in the iPhone 7S and Samsung will introduce an advance flexible display in the Note 6 or the Galaxy S8.

Stay tuned for more info.
