Samsung is not only the world leader in terms of smartphone sales, but it is also the trailblazer and pioneer in the television industry. But similar to the mobile industry, the TV sale have slowed down and Samsung is feeling the heat. Consumers tend to hang on to their older televisions that are good enough. To encourage them to upgrade, Samsung is introducing the next generation of Shud Tvs that Use Quantum Dot Technology.
“Following the first launch last year, we have applied the second-generation Quantum dot technology this year that has upgraded overall picture quality,” said Kim Hyun-seok, president and Samsung’s TV chief at a press conference in Seoul.
“We will continue to unveil new generation models.”
Not many manufacturers have shown interest in Quantum Dot Display due to the fact that they require cadmium, a toxic substance, for manufacturing and many countries apply restriction on their import. Samsung is the sole manufacturer who has pioneered the quantum dot displayed TV without involving cadmium.
So how is this superior to the existing SHUD TVs and other high-end televisions?
Quantum dots are like small pixels that emit different colour light based upon the size. The same is applied to the television and the result is that the colours are more vibrant and images, much sharper when compared to other technology. They are also much more power efficient than others.
But the first generation of quantum dot couldn’t offer picture quality that is better than the OLED. But that is set to change with the second generation. Samsung has mentioned that the current crop of upcoming SHUD TVs will dominate the OLED powered television.
“OLED technology is not complete. We will not enter the market unless current issues such as durability, afterimage and brightness are resolved,” said Kim Moon-soo, senior vice president
