Samsung is porting its custom Operating System that it built in collaboration with intel and Linux, the Tizen Operating System. It was primarily built as an alternative to the android mobile os which Samsung heavily relies on for its galaxy range of smartphones. But tizen is pretty much a flop in the mobile space.
For this specific reason, Samsung is now powering its television set and smartwatches with tizen os. Now news has broken out that tizen has been modified to run on Raspberry pi.
For people who don’t know what a raspberry pi is, it is a small computer that is the same size as your palm. It is very inexpensive ranging from $5 to $35 depending on the specifications. Developers use the raspberry pi to build several of their projects such as drones and pet robots.
Microsoft has announced that it is making available a special edition of windows 10 computer operating system that will run on the raspberry pi. Now Samsung has made available the tizen os 3.0 on this system and that good news for developers.
“The Samsung Open Source Group is currently in the process of porting Tizen 3.0 to the Raspberry Pi 2 (RPi2). Our goal is to create a device capable of running a fully-functional Tizen 3.0 operating system, and we chose the RPi2 because it is the most popular single-board computer with more than 5 million sold,” the developers have mentioned.
Samsung and intel have invested huge amount of resources into tizen and due to its defeat from android and iOS operating system, the developing company have intended the os to live on in other forms and raspberry pi is one such platform that can help tizen in its quest for survival.
If you are interested, with the right tools, you can create a mini version of a custom pc that can be used to surf web and consume media as well as create some custom projects.
