iPad Not Charging: How to Fix the Issue

iPad Not Charging

Having enjoyed one of your favorite episodes of Game of Thrones on your Ipad, you think it's time to juice the tablet to let you play an exciting car racing game endlessly. But you see “not charging” message on your iPad when plugged into the computer and wonder what exactly is preventing my tablet from being powered peacefully. Fret not, mate!

There could be quite a few reasons why your iPad may refuse to charge. For instance, it could be the fault port or even the outdated software. Let's head over to try out various solutions to fix the not charging issue on iPad!

iPad Not Charging

How to Troubleshoot Not Charging Error on iPad

Tip: Avoid charging your device while it's charging as it prevents the device from being powered up fast. It also tends to heat the device. Additionally, disable power-hungry features like Location Services and Background App Refresh when your device is in charge.

To disable location services;

Step #1. Tap on Settings → Privacy → Location Services.

Tap on Settings then Privacy then Location Services

Step #2. Turn it off.

Clean Up the Port

Ensure that the Lightning port of your iPad is clean and doesn't have gunk, dust, lint, debris other similar stuff. It might be preventing the device from being charged. You can use a wooden or plastic toothpick to remove debris if it's stuck there.

Reboot Your iPad

Whenever I find my device plagued with some miscellaneous issues, the first trick I try to get rid of the problem is force restart. Hard reset is good enough to flush out the bad bits that might have been stuck on your device.

Just press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and Home button at once. Keep holding both the buttons until the screen turns off and Apple logo appears.

Switch Ports

At times when you plug your iPad into a computer for the first time, the USB port might not recognize it. In such a case, you need to switch to a different USB port.

Switch Cables

Cables can get worn out overtime and stop charging your device securely. There are very few cables that are able to retain their top functionality for long. Hence, try using a different cable to see if it’s able to charge your device.

Try Connecting iPad to the iPad 12w Wall Charger

Still getting the “Not Charging” message on the iPad? Try plugging your tablet directly into a 12w charger from a wall outlet. As compared to 5w iPhone charger, iPad’s 12w charger is capable of juicing your device a lot faster. Besides, it also more efficient.

Update the iOS of your iPad

Hasn't got the fix as yet? Ensure that your iPad is running the latest iOS version. The old software might be the culprit behind this problem. Open Settings app>General>Software Update and install the latest iOS version.

Restore your device using iTunes

Haven't been able to overcome the problem? It's time to take a hard decision and restore it via iTunes. I know it takes a lot of time, but it can fix even a complicated issue. As compared to iCloud, iTunes restore offloads, re-installs, and then reloads all of your data; thereby eliminating all the bad bits that might be stuck.

Step #1. Connect your device to your Mac or Windows PC using the USB cable.

Step #2. Now, launch iTunes.

Step #3. Next, you need to click on the Device icon at the top left.

Click on iPad in iTunes

Step #4. Click on Backup and let it be completed.

Step #5. Next up, click on Restore iPad…

If nothing works… Contact Apple Support

Having encountered this problem on a few occasions, I can say that the solutions mentioned above can resolve it. In most cases, a force restart or a new cable does the trick and allows the iPad charge as usual. But just in case they fail to deliver the goods, contact Apple support.

Wrapping up:

So which one of the tricks got the job done for you? It'd be nice to know the name of the solution. If you have been able to resolve the problem with any other tricks (not mentioned above), tell us about them as well.
