Whilst we have been trying to keep it quiet, the secret is finally out – Down Jackets literally couldn’t be more popular this Autumn Winter for Men. The sheer choice catering for every level of budget along with the pure unadulterated practicality just makes a down Jacket a no-brainer this Winter, and the best thing about a good down? It will see you all the way through Spring.
If you only have one jacket for the whole year then you will be hard pressed to beat a good Down Jacket. What do you we mean by a ‘Down Jacket’? We mean a bloody warm, super practical coat – which as long as you choose the right style and shape for your body, will look super ace and is perfect for all types of layering. Whilst not usually waterproof, a couple of these beauties actually will withstand a shower.
One of our Male Fashion Trends for 2017 – we hand pick and test our top down jackets for men.
Patagonia Nano Puff
We are heading straight to ‘get noticed’ with this jacket. Down’s don’t need to be black and some of the colour options are just fantastic. Patagonia is already one of our favourite outdoor brands and the eco-friendly brand is bang on with this Nano Puff Down Jacket. It’s quite thin compared to many we tested but incredibly warm using the latest PrimaLoft® Gold down which is also water repellent. There’s no hood either which is perfect if you want to layer up and wear this under something else. The Yellow / Gold couldn’t be more spring if it tried and the black brick pattern thread make this jacket stand out like no other.
Available now from the Patagonia website for £160.
Rab Electron Down Jacket
If you feel the cold (or live up North), look no further than this beast of down jacket from RAB. It’s incredibly thick and possibly the warmest thing I have ever placed on my body. It featured a waterproof outer and a hood which can be closed around your face if you are ever truly stuck out in the elements. This Royal Blue with the Green accent colours is just beautiful and probably our favourite jacket on test!
Available from Go Outdoors for £207 it’s the warmest thing you will ever own!
Columbia HEATZONE 1000 TURBODOWN™ Down Jacket
Very converted and winner of numerous outdoor awards last year. Slightly longer that the other jackets featured here, if you don’t want a bomber this is the way to go. The Turbozone featured a reflective lining for extra warmth on the inside of 2 levels of down insultation. It also features taped seams and is completely waterproof. Perfect for the slopes.
Available from Columbia for £350.
North Face Thermoball Down Jacket
The latest Thermoball is new from North Face and offers near unrivalled warmth even when wet – quite the feat for such a thin jacket. With no hood and compressible to it’s own pocket, the Thermoball is the perfect mid-layer when you don’t know what the weather might throw at you. Available in a range of colours to suit your personal taste.
Available from North Face for £150.
North Ridge Hybrid Down Jacket
An entry level jacket on price but definitely not on quality. This is actually my own jacket from last year and I wanted to put it in as it hasn’t missed a beat. North Ridge is an own brand of Go Outdoors and as such is quality without the high price. This is a really simple and understated jacket, featuring a dark grey outer with hood and slightly brighter contrast inner.
Available from Go Outdoors for £110, if you want to try a down – this is the one.
Mountain Warehouse Down Jacket
THe lowest price point in our test, but super lighweight and slim making it perfect for sports like golf. With no hood it is also ace as a mid-layer if you have a proper waterproof outer to stick over the top – and all for less than £50 in the sale!
From Mountain Warehouse.
There we have it, if you only own one coat during the Winter of 2016 / 2017 then let it be down! Have one yourself? Send us a picture of you being awesome in it won’t you! @AverageJoesBlog
