Instagram rolls back controversial changes to newsfeed

Instagram has rolled back some of the controversial changes it has made to its news feed.

The company has faced major criticism in recent days about changes to the Instagram app, with high-profile players like Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian joining calls for the social network to ‘stop trying to be like TikTok’ and bring Instagram back to its former glory.

The company’s boss Adam Mosseri confirmed the changes, and said the firm had to “take a big step back and regroup.” When the critique first began last week, Mosseri doubled down on the changes to Instagram and said that it was a natural evolution to bring Reels and videos to the forefront on Instagram, and earlier in the week, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that the company would switch to more video on Instagram and Facebook, with more content recommended by artificial intelligence.

However, following the backlash, Instagram is now withdrawing some of its recent changes. Speaking to the Platformer newsletter, Adam Mosseri said: “I’m glad we took a risk — if we’re not failing every once in a while, we’re not thinking big enough or bold enough. But we definitely need to take a big step back and regroup. [When] we’ve learned a lot, then we come back with some sort of new idea or iteration. So we’re going to work through that.”

We don’t know what changes will be made in the coming weeks, but the company has confirmed it will “temporarily reduce” recommended posts from people you don’t follow, and cancel the plans to launch a new full-screen page design that takes inspiration from TikTok.
