New code in the iOS 16 beta has suggested the next Iphone will feature an always-on display.

Earlier this week, Apple released the first developer beta of the new iOS 16 software, set for release this September alongside new iPhones. In the code, there are a number of references to backlight management on iPhone screens, something necessary for enabling an always-on display.

First discovered by 9to5Mac, the code doesn’t explicitly say that an iPhone with an always-on display is coming, but developers have read between the lines, and the news ties into previous rumors and reports that an always-on display could be coming. Indeed, the new backlight management framework code references Springboard, something uses for the Lock Screen and Home Screen on the iPhone.

When combined with the new Lock Screen design as part of iOS 16, a new always-on display could be very useful, allowing consumers to see widgets and information at a glance without having to unlock their iPhones. It’s thought that the new feature would only be available on the iPhone Pro and iPhone Pro Max, as it requires ProMotion for a variable refresh rate.
