The Epson Artisan 1430 is the substitute for the Stylus 1400. At first we was a bit taken by the new handmade Epson label gave this printer, having only seen these assigned to low end consumption patterns and all-in-One devices. While the 1430 is the level of entry in the market of 13 “with a list price of $299, it has the features that could attract many photographers, especially for those who love the printing, but not Print day on, day out.

Epson packs the 1430 with a complete set of six ink tanks: black, cyan, magenta, yellow, light cyan, and light magenta. These are the high definition inks of the Epson Claria brand with stain resistance, scratches and improved water that has been claimed. A quick test of this stain and water resistance showed that the inks are up to their claim even on glossy paper, the water did not cause a problem and took a little more than normal pressure to see the stain problems.

Six individual ink tanks mean you just have to replace what is empty instead of all the colors. This helps keep the prices a little bit. Plans to use more cyan and yellow light for most photographic prints. Color cartridges run about $21 each, black on $20.

The real impression is very simple. Within most applications, such as Photoshop, Lightroom and Aperture, you have the option to allow the application to control the color of the management or let the printer manage the color. Depending on what you choose, you will have a different set of features available on the printer driver. We usually look at printers that are more pro-oriented and we are pleased that Epson has presented driver options with the 1430.

If you want to print directly on an inkjet-coated CD/DVD, the included tray and software will work pretty easily. The Epson print CD, included with the printer, allows you to create custom tags with images and text. It has a number of features, but the interface feels a little awkward and took some experiments to get the results we wanted.

The Artisan 1430 is a solid, entry-level format printer.Compatible with Wi-Fi, printing on a wide range of media types, including CD/DVD, and the offer to print without Borders up to 13×19 “, it is hard to find flaws in the printer at the suggested price $299 list, although we noticed lower prices when shopping. And while the printer will attract a wide range of photographers, those who print on higher volumes or need to print on heavier art media should look at the Epson R2000.
