If you've ever wondered why your garden was never infested with zombies, it's because those wonderful plants of yours have been killing them off (and using them as compost?). Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 is the next game you can own from Games with Gold, and it's a huge upgrade from the original tower-defense game. It plays a lot more like Team Fortress or Call of Duty now, with lots of different modes and a few nods to its roots. It's free to download from March 16th – April 15th.
The final game for March is one of the best — Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance — and it doesn't matter if you're a fan of Metal Gear Solid or not because this game has little to do with it, honestly. See how much damage a cyborg can do with an advanced sword, slicing metal pillars into 100 pieces in the blink of an eye while saving children is definitely something that you need to do before Easter, and Revengeance is free to download from March 16th – 31st.
Don't forget to check out Adventure Time: Pirates of the Enchiridion from the start of the month, a cartoonish RPG with the ability to roam free across the seas. You can read the review for it here.
Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2
Available Mar 16th – Apr 15th
If you've heard of Plants vs. Zombies before, you'll know it as a type of tower-defense style game. Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 is a greatly expanded game, with more of an emphasis on a third-person shooter experience than building defenses (although there are modes that include it).
I should also add that this is an online-only multiplayer game, so if you were looking for some single-player goodness, you're almost out of luck. The tower-defense mode will allow you to play alone, but the game is best played in co-op or multiplayer, honestly.
Team Vanquish will be the mode that most people play, most of the time, as it's a classic team deathmatch mode. There are around 3-4 different classes for the Zombies and Plants to play as, and there's not always a similar class available on the opposite team, which mixes things up a bit and can make playing on different sides have a different feel to it.
There's only one class that has a melee attack (and it's on Team Plant) so every other class you play will just have to keep shooting at your enemy (even if you can smell their fetid breath!)
The other modes include base attack and defense, king of the hill, capture the flag, and there's even one mode that tries to incorporate several modes into one, to mix things up.
Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 isn't as good as other similar games like Team Fortress 2 but there is a lot of variety here, and the game world is certainly colorful, which makes a nice break from the norm.
It's available to download from March 16th to April 15th!
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
Available Mar 16th - 31st
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is probably my favorite Games with Gold game for March. It's a different take on the Metal Gear universe as this time you're playing a cybernetic samurai who can cut through pretty much anything with his sword, be it a military helicopter, enemies or melons. If you meet your nemesis, cats, just run because those nimble critters will dodge every blow you swing at them!
I dare you to play the game and tell me that slicing things up isn't fun — and that's important because you'll be doing it a lot. The combat is pretty easy to get into. There are light and heavy attacks which can be combined to create combos. You might find it a little hard at first because the AI is no pushover and you'll need to learn how to get into attack range without taking too much damage. Learning when to activate your slowdown ability is when you advance from beginner to intermediate.
You can also learn how to slice a cyborg the proper way so that you can rip his spine from his body and use it to regenerate your own health.
You're a mercenary who's been hired to protect the Prime Minister, but you're beaten by a similarly styled cybernetic samurai. This is where your “Revengeance” comes into play, and the whole game is a blast (or slice) from there.
The bosses are all fun to fight too, with their different abilities and strengths needing different tactics to overcome. The final boss is exactly what a final boss should be, too. I won't spoil it, but I will warn you — be prepared!
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is available to download and own from March 16th to 31st so don't miss out on this one!
