You can replace everything on this Laptop, including individual input and output ports.

The push for fully modular laptops into the mainstream by manufacturers has not been a success for a while.

However, one manufacturer, Framework, hopes they can change this narrative. Starting May this year, they pushed their laptop configurations for preorders.

These are now shipping those out to customers and we can only hope to see if this will be a success for them.

They are also promising to deliver the second batch of shipments starting August this year.

These are for Framework laptops and Framework Laptop DIY Edition units.

This move is perfect timing for Framework. Just a few days ago, the US Federal Trade Commission voted on the right-to-repair policies.

They unanimously agreed to adopt this policy and remove the common roadblocks that manufacturers like to add to their manufacturing processes to stop individuals and small businesses from repairing products.

This modular laptop by Framework is a perfect example of how manufacturers can embrace this newly passed policy on the right-to-repair.

The laptop is fully modular from the input and output ports, right to the motherboard. You get four expansion ports with it, meaning that you can populate each of these with a USB-C module.

You can also decide to do a mixup of USB-C, a Display Port, USB-A, a MicroSD card slot, and an HDMI module.

You also get storage expansion cards for 250GB and 1TB from Framework.

These storage expansion cards leverage a USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface to offer you sequential read speeds going up to 1,000MB/s. You also get sequential write speeds of 375MB/s for the 250GB, and 1,000MB/s for the 1TB.

Framework also says that they will add more expansion cards over time within the Framework Marketplace while also opening up the design to allow community members and third parties to create their own versions of the same.

Framework’s introductory model has a 13.5-inch display with a resolution of 2256 x 1504. The laptop also comes with one among these three 11th Gen Intel Tiger Lake processors: Core i5 1135G7, Core i7 1185G7, or Core i7 1165G7. Each of these comes with onboard Xe graphics.

These modular laptops start at $999 but can be upgraded further to your liking.

You also get the option to start with the DIY Edition at only $749 and add the parts that you need. This is a better option than going for any other regular laptops under $700.

This gives you a huge advantage over going for a regular laptop which forces you to pay for all the components including those that you may never need.

This move by Framework brings hope that in the near future, we will also see DIY gaming laptops. Hopefully, this fully modular laptop becomes a success.
