Experimac Franchise Opens in Winchester, Repairs Apple Products

After being laid off and let down by the corporate world, Shane Cannon decided to take matters into his own hands and open his own business.

He recently launched an Experimac franchise at 86 Featherbed Lane, behind Domino’s Pizza.

Experimac buys, sells, trades and repairs pre-owned Apple products.

Cannon, 42, said Experimac is meeting a local need, since there are no Apple stores in the area.

“I can’t tell you how many times people have come to the door and said, ‘Thank you for being here,’” Cannon said. “They don’t want to drive to Reston to have their Apple computers worked on.”

Cannon said Apple won’t work on many of its older products, but Experimac will “work on anything.”

Cannon grew up in Berryville and spent many years in the corporate world selling diesel and natural gas engines.

“I found my way into the corporate world and got to making good money,” he said. “When you are making good money, it’s hard to walk away. You get that lifestyle established.”

He had been working at Cummins Inc. in Indiana for several years before moving with his family to Frederick County in September 2015 for a new position with the company. But by December of that year, he experienced a corporate layoff and began exploring the possibility of opening his own business.

“I’ve always had a desire to open a business,” Cannon said. “Just the thought of opening your own business and doing your own thing, it’s always been a passion.”

Within a month of being laid off, Cannon found information online about opening a franchise business. He eventually got in touch with United Franchise Group, which is headquartered in West Palm Beach, FL. The conglomerate has been in the franchising industry for over 30 years and has more than 1,400 franchisees throughout the world, according to its website.

United Franchise Group told Cannon about Experimac, which is one of its franchises. Experimac has more than 100 locations, with 25-30 additional stores in various stages of development. The company plans to have 200 locations nationwide by the end of 2017.

According to a news release from the business, Experimac customers typically enjoy an average savings of 60 percent on pre-owned Apple products over big-box retailers. The release states that Experimac takes the risk out of purchasing pre-owned equipment with a 90-day warranty included with every hardware sale and service repair.

After learning that Experimac was “growing like wildfire,” Cannon became interested and in March 2016 signed a contract to buy a franchise for the Winchester area. The business had a soft opening in December.

A grand opening celebration is set for May 11 from 4 to 7 p.m., with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4:30 p.m..

“I think it’s a place where you can come and get help,” Cannon said. “We are local and we are about supporting our own community.”

No are appointments needed, and he tries to do repairs quickly. If something fails or doesn’t function properly on its own, Experimac will repair or replace the defective part at no cost.

Cannon has the sole right to open a Experimac in Winchester, Frederick County, Clarke County and western Loudoun County, which includes Purcellville and Middleburg. The town of Front Royal also is included.

He said if the Winchester location continues to be successful, he may eventually open an Experimac in Purcellville.
