If you are a Blackberry 10 or BlackBerry OS user, I have some good and bad news for you. BlackBerry has announced this evening that they will continue support for BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry OS devices for another two years.
“We manufactured our last BB10 and BBOS devices in 2015 and in the years since we have received many questions about our plans for ongoing support. First, we want to say thank you for your continued interest and passion for all things BlackBerry. Second, we want to acknowledge that we know your productivity relies upon the security, reliability, dependability, durability, extended battery life, and ease-of-use we designed and built into each handset. Third, we want to reward your loyalty by committing to providing you with at least two full years of additional support for BB10 and at least two full years of BlackBerry network access for BBOS devices.” -Alex Thurber Senior Vice-President and General Manager of the Mobility Solutions Division at BlackBerry.
It is great to see BlackBerry realizing that there are a ton of BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry OS users out there who still love their device. While it is great to see them continue to support for a while, it does mean that BlackBerry is finally putting a timestamp on support for BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry OS. This means that if during that two-year time frame, you will want to make sure to look into upgrade options for when the time does come for BlackBerry to end support. BlackBerry announced that they are partnering with BlackBerry Mobile to start a trade-up service for those with BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry OS devices, so that they can trade to a shiny new BlackBerry Android device such as the BlackBerry KEYone or the BlackBerry Motion.
BlackBerry also announced ending support for a few BlackBerry services. BlackBerry will be shutting down BlackBerry World app store on 12/31/2019, BlackBerry Travel, February 2018, and BlackBerry PlayBook video services will shut down in March of 2018. It is sad to see these services being shut down, as they played a big part in the user experience for BlackBerry devices.
