I am going to start right out by saying I am so happy to be the proud owner of the Big Berkey Water Filter. We have lived in a house for over 8 years with our water from our well. Now I do appreciate that we do not have to pay for our water but it does have its own “taste”. I have been drinking it for years, well since we have lived here.

Then something changed. I quit smoking after 30 years and well nothing has really tasted good yet due to the medicine I am on. So I started drinking bottled water. Between the fact that my husband won’t drink the tap water we have been purchasing bottled water for years. Also, we have had to purchase jugs of water because well water destroys coffee makers. I think since we have lived here we have gone through 7 coffee makers? Yes, you get lazy or run out of water in the jugs and then that well water does it destruction.

Then The Berkey showed up and it is wonderful! My husband and I put it together as the directions were not hard, but I wanted to make sure I did it all correctly. I failed to take pictures as we were putting the actual unit together but my husband did it so quickly that there wasn’t much time for the pictures.

What is so great about The Big Berkey?

The Berkey Water Filter Systems are more powerful than any other gravity filter element currently available. I have never really seen such a nice water filtration/purification system.

What can be removed from your water?

I won’t list them all here since there are so many things that it removes but I wanted to share a few with you. The Berkey water filters can remove Flouride (and these are all 99.9%), Viruses, Pathogenic Bacteria, Lead, Arsenic, Iron, Mercury and more. You can read the list here.

What will this unit do for your family?

This Berkey comes with 2 Black Berkey Purification elements, but if you would rather have 4 you can order it with 4 instead, or add on later. It is ideal for small to medium families and be used during travel, outdoor events or unexpected emergencies. When our electricity goes out our water pump no longer works and then we do not have any water unless we have water bottles on hand.

It is constructed of highly polished AISI 304 stainless steel. It is so shiny I just love it. It stores about 2.25 gallons or 8.5 liters. The upper chamber nests inside the lower chamber for transport and then it is only 1 foot 1 inch tall. I could not figure out when it came why the box was so small. For normal everyday use, this system easily serves 1-4 people, fully configured, it can serve up to 85-170 people a day, during an emergency!
