Big W, a clothing retailer in Austrailia, is in some hot water after a mom called them out for gender biased clothing.
Nikita Friedman was shopping for her young daughter, when she came upon a pair of shorts that really shocked her. She grabbed a pair of boy’s shorts in the same size 1, and took a picture.
Friedman posted the picture to Facebook with the following caption, “Little girls shorts in a size 1 next to little boys shorts in a size 1. Why on earth does my 1 year old need to have shorts so short that her nappy is hanging out??? Little girls are not sex objects. Gender bias is disgusting.”
The post has gone viral and has received thousands of likes, shares and comments.
Big W quickly responded by saying, they will “certainly discuss yours and other views posted to this thread with the relevant team.”
Friedman also wrote, “If we don’t let retailers know it’s an issue, nothing will ever change. I chose Facebook as the forum to express my dissatisfaction because their in-store signage encourages customers to go online to leave feedback, so that’s what I’ve done.”
She has a valid point and certainly little girls who wear a size 1 do not need to be in clothes that revealing, especially when the boy’s counterpart is so different.
Let’s get it together, people!
