Ὀνος ἀκούσας φωνῆς τέττιγος ἡδέως αὐτῇ ἐπετέρπετο, καὶ τὸν τέττιγα ἐπηρώτα λέγων:
«Τί ἄρα τρεφόμενος οὔτω γλυκεῖαν ἔχεις τὴν φωνήν;»
Ὁ δὲ τέττιξ τῷ ὄνῳ ἀντέφησεν:
«Ἡ ἐμὴ τροφὴ ἀήρ ἐστι καὶ δρόσος».
Ὁ δὲ ὄνος τούτου ἀκούσας τοῦ ρήματος ἐνόμισε μέθοδον εὑρηκέναι δι᾿ ἧς ὅμοιαν τῷ τέττιγι σχοίη φωνήν καὶ τὸ στόμα εὐθὺς ἀνοίξας πρὸς τὸν ἀέρα κεχήνωτο ὡς δεξόμενος δῆθεν δρόσον εἰς διατροφήν, ἕως οὗ τῷ λιμῷ διεφθάρη.
Οὗτος ὁ μὺθος δηλοὶ ὅτι οὐ δεῖ τινα τὰ φυσικὰ τοῖς παρὰ φύσιν ἐξομοιοὺν καὶ τοῖς ἀδυνάτοις ἀφρόνως ἐπιχειρεῖν.
Ὁ γάιδαρος ἄκουσε κάποτε τὸ τζίτζικα καὶ κατευχαριστήθηκε.
«Μὰ τί τρῶς κι ἔχεις τόσο γλυκιὰ φωνή;» τὸν ρώτησε.
«Ἀέρα καὶ δροσιά» ἀπάντησε ἐκεῖνος.
Τότε ὁ γάιδαρος νόμισε πὼς ἔμαθε τὸ μεγάλο μυστικὸ ποὺ κάνει τὶς ὄμορφες φωνές.
Ἄνοιξε λοιπὸν τὸ στόμα του, γιὰ νὰ χορτάσει τάχα μπόλικο ἀέρα καὶ δροσιά, κι ἔμεινε ἔτσι χάσκοντας, μέχρι ποὺ πέθανε ἀπὸ τὴν πείνα.
Ο μύθος λέει πὼς δὲν ἔχουμε, οὔτε πρέπει νὰ ἔχουμε, ὅλοι τὴν ἴδια φύση καὶ πὼς εἶναι καθαρὴ ἀπερισκεψία νὰ προσπαθοῦμε ἀφύσικα πράγματα.

One day as an Ass was walking in the pasture, he found some Grasshoppers chirping merrily in a grassy corner of the field.
He listened with a great deal of admiration to the song of the Grasshoppers. It was such a joyful song that his pleasure-loving heart was filled with a wish to sing as they did.
“What is it?” he asked very respectfully, “that has given you such beautiful voices? Is there any special food you eat, or is it some divine nectar that makes you sing so wonderfully?”
“Yes,” said the Grasshoppers, who were very fond of a joke; “it is the dew we drink! Try some and see.”
So thereafter the Ass would eat nothing and drink nothing but dew.
Naturally, the poor foolish Ass soon died.
Moral
The laws of nature are unchangeable.
