Beach Volleyball: Tips for Beginners

Beginner Beach Volleyball Tips

Sunny southern California offers many opportunities for fitness and one of the hottest, most popular activities for adults is Beach Volleyball. Volleyball is no longer a sport just for high schools or professional athletes but rather a sport that anyone can learn and enjoy. Volleyball offers a full body workout as well as hand-eye coordination development and the opportunity to socialize with new friends.

Interested in learning about Beach volleyball but it’s been awhile since you participated in a team sport? Here are some tips to help you get started and enjoy beach volleyball.

Beach Volleyball vs. Court Volleyball

First, beach volleyball is quite different from court volleyball. The surface is soft, the lines on a beach volleyball court are generally made from ropes or simply drawn in the sand, and the ball is heavier and deflated a little to “deaden” it so that it cannot be blown by the wind.  The rules for beach volleyball are different, too, and learning from professional coaches or attending a volleyball clinic will enhance your enjoyment of the game.

Being in shape for any sport, or improving needed skills like footwork or serving will make game participation more enjoyable. For beach volleyball, a full body exercise sport, being able to make agile movements in the sand is key. Go to your nearest beach and practice walking, running, jumping, and side-stepping to develop your footwork skills.

Beach volleyball is a sport that uses minimal personal equipment, but a few things are important. First of all, a good sweat-proof sunscreen with a high SPF is necessary. A day in the sun is always fun, but you want to protect your skin with a good sunscreen. A hat, sunglasses with a safety strap and comfortable beach attire is what you need. Shoes are optional but remember to protect your feet from blisters.

Fortunately for the beginner, playing the game and having fun is more important than skill. Technique will come with practice. Remember that a player’s job is to keep the ball in the air and off the sand – the more you play, the better your skills will become. Just keep your eye on the ball and go for it!
