Differences Between Club Volleyball and High School Volleyball

Club Volleyball vs. High School Volleyball

For young people, the sport of Volleyball offers a fast-paced, high energy game. This competitive sport is popular across the nation, providing players a variety of opportunities for practice and competition.  In many areas of the country, young people have the opportunity to participate in club volleyball or on a high school volleyball team. But what are the differences between these two types of volleyball competition, as well as the pros and cons of participating in either type of team? Here, City Beach provides an answer.

What is Club Volleyball?

Club Volleyball is a network of nationally organized, competitive volleyball teams developed known as the USA Junior Olympic Volleyball for pre-college players and competing under the rules as set forth by the USA Volleyball organization. Club volleyball provides competition and advanced training for players from ages 10 to 18  who wish to compete on the local, regional, and national levels.

Playing club volleyball provides the competitive player with access to the sport’s most talented coaches, an extended season with a venue for fitness and skill development, as well as exposure to college coaches for the older student athletes. The extended season of club volleyball provides an opportunity athletes to test their skills against other athletes locally, regionally, and nationally at the June finals.

What is High School Volleyball?

At the high school level, volleyball for girls is a fall sport and a spring sport for the boys. The rules are determined by each state’s athletic association rules. However, many state organizations follow the rules of the National Federation of State High School Associations for governance. Volleyball at the high school level may or may not be as competitive as club volleyball.

The shorter length of the high school season gives those athletes the opportunity to compete in other high school sports and competition extends from the local level to the state level only.
