In our writing class we are currently working on the 5 W’s: who, what, when, where, and why. As I Write this post I will explain how we are using this approach. I created worksheets for my daughter to use. It can be used with both older and younger. It is free for you to download. I will post the link at the end of this post.
We first picked a specific topic that we could research. We took index cards and wrote different facts that we came across. We used one fact per index card. My daughters topic of choice was Amelia Earhart. The object is to be able to answer the 5 W’s. As we were writing the facts I didn’t expect my daughter to write in Complete Sentences. I told her they could be short and sweet notes.
After we were finished with our research, I had her write on the back what category that the card fit into (who, what, where, when, and why). Once we were finished with that we sorted the cards into piles of each category. We then picked out one important fact that was found. Once we eliminated the rest of the cards. I had my daughter make complete sentences on the index card. Today she will be using the worksheets to write her final sentences in the categories.
For the older kids, I have lines and after they write under each category, I created a section for them to combine it into a paragraph.
Hope some of you can use this in your writing class.
