Camping essentials that are easy to forget

Are you busy planning your next Camping trip? If so, you’re likely not alone. Campsite bookings increased by as much as 500% in some parts of the UK last summer, and it’s likely to be a similar story this year as uncertainty remains around foreign travel. Packing can be the worst part of any getaway – and it’s often left until the very last minute. But whether you’re a seasoned camper or a newcomer to the game, there are plenty of items that can make your next trip more comfortable. Some elements are easy to remember – like your tent and sleeping bag, for example. But others you might not think of until you find yourself desperately needing them on your first day or night. Below, we’ve rounded up a few items that fall into the latter camp to help you get prepared. Clothing Your clothing needs to be suitable for the time of year you’re travelling in. But unlike staying in a hotel or apartment, you’ll feel the chilly nights and mornings when camping – so it’s always worth taking extra layers. Thermals make a warm and compact base layer, while waterproof trousers are worth packing as well as a trusty coat. Always pack extra socks too, in case your feet get wet or muddy. Sleep gear While you might be able to make do with a pile of clothes, a camping pillow will reduce the risk of waking up with a sore neck. They take up less space than regular pillows and come in blow-up, foam-filled and stuff-sack variations. A good quality sleeping pad will even out bumps in the ground and keep the cold out too. And don’t forget a torch for trips to the toilet at night! Culinary equipment If you’re planning to prepare some basic meals yourself, you’ll need the right equipment to do so. Plates, bowls, mugs and cutlery are obvious – but don’t forget extras like washing up liquid and a bowl, sponge and tea towel. Lighters and matches are essential for firing stoves and BBQs – but remember to be careful. The government warns that a fire can destroy a tent in less than 60 seconds. Toiletries and medicines As well as toothbrushes and toothpaste, deodorant, face wash and any medication, there are a few extras that will help you stay clean and healthy. Antibacterial wipes are useful when washing facilities are limited, while insect repellent is worth packing for night-time – especially when staying in fields in the summer. Paracetamol, antihistamines and plasters could all come in handy too depending on what you have planned. Travel admin You might not need your passport – but remember to have your campsite booking details printed out if necessary. Hopefully you won’t need to use your travel insurance and breakdown cover, but knowing where your policies are, at least, will give you peace of mind. If you’re travelling with a pet, it could be wise finding out where the nearest vet is just in case. Are you all set? Check you’ve got these essentials covered, then get on the road and enjoy your break!
