The Tail Comes First

The beginning of a beautiful DIY unicorn costume
I make my children’s costumes because I get to be as creative as I want. Some see an all white plain outfit, but I see a DIY unicorn costume

My projects never start  where a normal person would, and this DIY Unicorn Costume is no different. I was so excited to find out what the tail and mane would look like, I started with the tail. I searched high and low and found this tutorial from I Save A to Z blog because I love how soft it looks. Her tutorial is much better at explaining then I can do for this part, so please do check her out.

For my tail and mane, I went with Lion Brand Landscapes 100% acrylic. It’s rainbow. And oh so very vibrant. And soft. ( Clearly, I love this yarn.) I also used the standard Red Heart yarn for the “spine” or backing for them both. I double strand braided it before I did anything and left about 6 inches out. Now just brush softly and slowly the yarn. it’s going to be really curly, and that’s ok.

Supplies needed for a DIY unicorn costume
I ended up only needing just a bit of that purple and stuck with the white for most of my Red Heart yarn needs

After you have gotten your tail to fluff on the end of the braid, its time to give it some body and fluff. Take several strands of that beautiful rainbow yarn and tie them with the other yarn. Now start to unravel it. Using a brush (SOFT BRISTLE) begin to brush the strands until they start to resemble hair. I happen to like the wave and slight curl, so I stopped there.

*word to the wise: you can use your flat iron or straightening brush, on a low setting to get the hair to be flat. But don’t get it too hot because it will melt*

When you are satisfied with your puff of hair, go ahead and start tieing them onto the braid. When you are finished, fluff it and make sure there are not any obvious holes that need to be filled. Leave about an inch of room at the top as to attach to your DIY unicorn costume pants.

For the mane, you are going to do the exact same thing, except instead of making it bushy, you will make it one long “spine” and long tufts of hair in a single row that extends vertically. I know this is a terrible job of explaining the mane for the DIY unicorn costume, so please just see the photos below.

Pants Fit For A Unicorn

These pants. Ladies, I loved them when I first got them in the mail. They are rouched on the sides in white and look so cute when they are finished. BUT- they are completely see thru. Like “oh hello bug with your polka dot undies.” So consider that when it comes to wearing them. My solution will be tights under but that will be because here in the PNW its cold at the end of October.

Attaching the fluffy tail in our DIY unicorn costume
Flip the long part that you left at the top down and attach the tail.

To attach the tail, bend the top portion back and hot glue to the butt of the pants. For safety, I like to put cardboard inside the waistband,  but it is not required. I used the area where the tag is sewn in as a reference point to aim for. Boom. Done.

DIY unicorn costume pants. So very cute!
Say WHAT?? These DIY unicorn costume pants are so amazing.

I love anything that sparkles. Bugs DIY unicorn costume had to sparkle. Thank you again to Karen for the giant bag of rhinestones. You need to hot glue to each side of the rouche a large rhinestone. Two rows of rhinestones on each leg. Again. BOOM! You are halfway done with your DIY unicorn costume!

Even Unicorns Love Sparkles

Attach clips to the mane and hood when completing the DIY unicorn costume
Start here when glueing on the mane.

To attach your mane, use a few clips and attach it to the tippy top of the hood. Next, using your glue gun, start at the top and apply dots of glue and hold. Add some rhinestones around the face of the hood in equal intervals.

I get so impatient sometimes. The kids were still at school so I had to take one for the team to show you the lovely bling on this hood!

And the finished product, because, unicorns.
