I hate the question “What’s your favorite flower?” Why? Why do I have to choose just one? I adore flowers and have since well as long as I can remember. In fact, I almost did hard time because I love flowers. Hydrangea’s to be exact.
I was about 7, possibly 8. We lived in a beautiful community of town homes, and everyone had
flower gardens. Except for us. Sorry, mom and dad, but ours sucked. I had been eyeing the neighbor’s beautiful roses in the front of the window. They were spectacular. I knew I could not touch those without beeing seen, so I admired from afar. One afternoon, he left the gate open, and I caught a glimpse of the most beautiful flower I had ever laid eyes on. They were taller than I, and so many heads of flowers, I figured that the man would never notice if I had taken just a few for myself.
I was wrong. He cared.
I decided to help myself that day. And almost instantly I regretted it. The neighbor had not left the premises, just the yard. To get the mail. Much to his surprise, he found a young girl, practically breaking branches off of his prized flowers, hydrangea bush. In my defense, they were the most dazzling shade of blue you had ever seen and you would have been tempted to pluck yourself. They were that good.
That escalated quickly
The man was stunned for a hot second, but not long enough for me to recover from being caught. I was the good kid in the neighborhood. I never got in trouble, I didn’t talk back and I never broke the rules. Until that moment. After a pause, he snatched my beautiful loot and started screaming that I was going to jail. And did I know what they did to little kids who went to jail?
I was too afraid to answer.
As soon as my house was in sight, I tore off, trying to get away from that guy. I presume that he talked to my parents, and did not, in fact, call the police, but at the time, I was hiding in the far corner of my backyard, thinking of all the horrible things they would do to me in jail.
It never stopped
My love for flowers did not diminish after that. In every home I have lived in, I have seriously tried to have a flower garden. My favorite to grow? You guessed it. Hydrangeas. And until recently, I have had just one, in a pot. Last fall, my lovely mother in law decided she no longer wanted her beauties and pulled them and told me to plant them at home. Today, they are just starting to bloom. They are beautiful and healthy.
But hydrangeas are sooo expensive!
I have seen little tiny ones at the store go for $10+! That is insane to me! I started looking ( with the help of Matt, my research hero!) for ways to take cuttings and regrow our own like we did with the tomatoes in the Garden Update. There are soo many different ways to go here, right now I am starting with the simplest solution.
Dig, Soften & Burry
I like to do the simple way for most things, and this method is as easy as it gets. Ready?
Bend the plant branch over, laying flat on the softened dirt
Scoop dirt over the leaf nodes if possible, if not, that’s ok
Place semi-heavy rock over branch and water in.
And now you wait. That’s it. Grab a book or something. After a while, new roots are supposed to grow and whala! The exciting things that could come of this make my whole heart excited. Can you imagine, a wall of bamboo and hydrangeas? Like a privacy fence, that is living? Ugh, I have this amazing little cottage look in my head and I am way too excited!
