Incredibly tasty, this easy and Basic Guacamole takes less than 5 minutes to make. It is the perfect dip for your Mexican-style meal today! Guacamole is an extremely versatile item and goes with basically any Mexican meal. Pair it with as simple of a dish as tortilla chips or baked nachos to more complicated burritos or enchiladas. This is the perfect dip. Planning a taco night? Fajita night? How about a quesadilla night? You get the gist… Guacamole is a necessity!
Have you ever looked at the list of Ingredients in the store-bought containers of guacamole? Well, just doing a basic Google search and reading off of the label on a popular brand of guacamole, this is what I discovered on the list:
- corn syrup solids
- monosodium glutamate
- avocado powder??
- sodium benzoate
- sodium acid pyrophosphate
- lactic acid
- xanthan gum
- locust bean gum
What are these things??? No, thank you! And why are there sooo many ingredients listed before avocados. Aren’t avocados the main ingredient in guacamole?? Yikes!
I would avoid consuming weird and unknown ingredients! So, unless you are buying guacamole from a store like Whole Foods or reading the labels carefully to see just what is exactly inside, I highly recommend using fresh ingredients and making your own.
It’s so easy to make and requires only a few ingredients: ripe avocado, lime juice, sea salt, and chopped cilantro. If you want it super basic, you can omit the cilantro. To make this, simply scoop out the avocado from the skin and dump it into a bowl. Using a fork, mash the avocado. Just don’t over-mash it because you want it to be a little chunky. Next add the rest of the ingredients and mix to combine.
That’s it! You have yourself a bowl of guacamole dip.
Jazz it up
If you want a dip with a bit more substance, you can definitely tweak this recipe by adding onions, tomatoes and jalapenos/chili peppers. Add all of these or just one or two… whatever you want! To keep proportions consistent, add any of these in the following quantities:
- 1 tbsp. onions, diced
- 1 – 2 tbsp. tomato, diced with seeds removed
- as much diced jalapenos or chili peppers to get it to the spiciness that you desire
If you want to take a shortcut, you can just add 2 tablespoons of salsa. However, be wary of the ingredients! Double check the label and try to buy one with recognizable ingredients.
- 1 ripe avocado
- ¼ tsp. sea salt
- ½ tbsp. lime juice
- 1 tbsp. cilantro, finely chopped
- Cut avocado and place in a medium bowl.
- Mash the avocado using a fork. Don't over-mash because you want it to stay a little chunky.
- Add the salt, lime juice and cilantro. Stir to combine.
