Koji Review: Best Japanese Food in Fulham

We moved to Parsons Green six months ago and despite loving Japanese food, we had not tried Koji, an adorable restaurant next to Hally’s, which is one of the best brunch spots in PG. Maybe the reason I never got motivated is that I usually walk by it on Sundays, when it looks very quiet at lunch. But, I had plans with my friend Sabrina for a girl’s night out and she asked if there weren’t any cute spots in my area, so I decided it was Koji time.

And I am glad we did. The vibe is completely different at night  – it was actually buzzy and full of good looking couples and groups of friends. We discussed in advance and decided that we weren’t in the mood to be very healthy but would attempt not to be overly bad……Sabrina is also trying to reduce her carb intake (aren’t we all…) so it was good motivation to avoid the rice dishes.

What we ate:

Edamame with maldon sea salt: very straightforward…..warm, salty and not overcooked which some people tend to do.

Watercress salad: served with a light yuzu and miso dressing. It was delicate and simple.

Lobster summer rolls: this was my favourite dish of the evening. The lobster was tender and was neatly wrapped in greens with some avocado for creaminess and served with yuzu dressing. We have been making Summer Rolls recently at home and have developed a new appreciation for the beautiful ones we find in restaurants as ours look messy and fall apart often.

Fresh and delicious Lobster Summer Rolls at Koji

Sashimi: just some classic and fresh tuna and Salmon.

Broccoli: nicely steamed and served with a dark miso dressing. Nothing special but good.

Glazed salmon teriyaki: I am not a big teriyaki fan but love salmon. When Sabrina suggested it, I immediately thought of a co-worker I travel often with, who always orders chicken or salmon teriyaki at Japanese restaurants. The fish was beautifully cooked and it was a very generous portion, but I prefer ordering rolls or sashimi instead. I guess it was good to try since we had already eaten some sashimi before.

Truffles: Sabrina said she would join me for dessert if I ordered it or would be happy to skip. So, trying to be semi well behaved we ordered the truffles, not realizing they were large ones. And, because they were delicious, we devoured them. Our favourite was a coconut truffle but their spicy one was good too.

Yummy truffles at Koji Parsons Green

In sum: very cute and lively neighbourhood spot. If I lived far from Parsons Green, I am not sure I would track across London for it but if you live west, it’s a great spot. I also want to go back and try their rolls and carbier dishes…..
