Who said you can’t have dessert for breakfast? Summer is officially here and rules no longer apply. If you want to have a brownie for breakfast, go for it! Need a cookie to start your day out right, grab one! Sometimes an ice cream cone is just the way to go before heading out into the beautiful, warm weather.

That being said, the sugar rush and eventual crash that comes with more processed desserts can be a bit of downer. But don’t let that stop you from living your best childhood dream of desserts before dinnertime. With this recipe, I decided to take on that challenge. By fusing together my usual breakfast smoothie with a creamy, chocolatey ice cream taste, I created the ultimate dessert for breakfast. With all of the flavor but none of the sugar-crash or guilt, this healthy Milkshake is the perfect sweet way to start your day.

Altogether, this blend of bananas, cashew butter, dates, and Cacao Powder makes for an unbelievably richer and sweet drink without all of those extra add-ins that can bog you down throughout the day.

No sugar.

No dairy.

No artificial ingredients.

No guilt.

The frozen bananas and cashew butter create a thickness and creaminess that replicates the consistency of a milkshake perfectly while giving the drink an already rich and sweet flavor as a base. Throw in some dates on top and voilà! You have achieved the ultimate sweet levels that only ice cream ever seems able to reach. And last of all, my pièce de résistance, the cacao powder. Because what dessert is truly complete without a little chocolate.

There are two things that I unconditionally love: smoothies and sweets.

Every single day without fail, I have a smoothie, sometimes even twice a day. It is just one of those things that can get me going and ready to take on the day (aka my version of coffee). The only time I don’t have a smoothie is when I’m traveling and don’t have access to a blender. Even if it’s winter and subzero outside, I will still have a smoothie. Which, may or may not have resulted in my fingernails turning blue a couple of times and the heater making its permanent home under my desk.

On top of this, I have one of THE biggest sweet tooths out there. Almost to the degree that it is a problem. Because of this, I have had to find ways to satiety my abnormally high bliss point so I am not eating an entire tray of brownies on the daily. Although this may have happened once or twice before. This combo of dates, bananas, cacao powder, and cashew butter honestly tastes so much like a milkshake that even my fellow sugar addicts will have no doubt in their minds that this recipe is definitely classified as a dessert.

The only note I would make is to make sure you have either a high-powered blender or a food processor. These seem to be the only things that have enough power to blend the ingredients and reach the smoothness of a true milkshake.

  • 2 ripe bananas, frozen
  • 2 tbsp cacao powder
  • 1-2 medjool dates, pitted
  • 1 tbsp cashew butter
  • 2 cups almond milk


  • Add all ingredients into a high-powered blender and blend until a smooth consistency is reached
  • Pour into a glass and enjoy~


If you want a sweeter milkshake, add two medjool dates instead of one.
