ALL-NATURAL PURE MOUTHWASH

I am almost done with my first full week of classes in grad school. I still can’t believe that I’m already here. It feels unreal on so many levels. Except for on the learning level. My poor little brain can not handle all of this information being thrown at it. There was really no segway into or lessons they just tossed us into the deep end and hoped for the best.

This past week we were discussing natural methods of healing, remedies, or replacement products that we already knew about. One girl mentioned how she uses a natural mouthwash she makes because she can’t handle any of the usual mouthwashes out there.

I was surprised because I am the exact same way. I physically get sick anytime I use mouthwash. And before any of you ask, I do not swallow any of it. I have tried different mouthwashes out there but all of them cause relatively the same thing to happen to me. So I was definitely up for trying out any product that could have all of the benefits that a usual mouthwash has but none of the negative side effects that come with it.

Even if you don’t get the same negative effects as I do from mouthwashes, most mouthwashes still have that alcohol burn to them that not only is difficult for adults but is nearly impossible for kids to handle. We make special mouthwashes for kids that are 10x tamer and safe to swallow but the adults get full blown pain.

I have never really understood that.

Why, when there are so many ways out there to get clean and healthy teeth, do we have to have a burn that goes nearly all the way to our soul every time we use a mouthwash? It’s kind of like a weirdly twisted punishment to start the day.

To make this, you don’t even need to go out and buy anything. Most of the items are probably already in your spice cabinet or garden. All you may potentially need to get is an airtight container to store this in. It can be anything.

A mason jar.

An olive oil pourer.

Or a specialty bottle from a craft store.

Anything will work as long as you are able to seal it and can easily pour it either directly into your mouth or into a cup that you can swish from.

WHAT YOU NEED:

Baking Soda
Green Tea
Salt
Mint
Sage
Thyme

BAKING SODA

Baking soda is one of those staples that you always hear about where natural teeth products are concerned, and for good reason. Not only does baking soda help to balance out the pH levels in your mouth, which is especially helpful when eating higher acidity foods, but also helps neutralize bad breath, fight gum disease, mouth ulcers, and sores, in addition to whitening teeth.

GREEN TEA

While many teas are known to cause staining on teeth, green tea isn’t one of them. It has actually been proven to strengthen and whiten teeth instead. It can also help fight bad breath causing bacteria and dissolve plaque that may have built up on teeth over time.

SALT

For anyone who has been to the ocean, you know how powerful salt water can be when it gets into your nose. When focused solely in the month and allowed to work its magic without being spit out right away, salt water can help break up any food stuck in between teeth, kill bacteria, and reduce inflammation that may occur due to sores or infections.

MINT

Along with being another ingredient that helps to fight bacteria in the mouth, mint can also prevent infections while working to improve the bodies maintenance of bone density in your teeth and jaw.

THYME

Along with several other ingredients on this list, thyme aids in repairing and stopping a variety of gum troubles as well as improving the overall health of your gums. In addition, thyme helps with preventing and slowing tooth decay.

SAGE

Another herb that you may have in your own backyard actually has incredible healing powers. Sage has been proven to be able to clean out sores in the mouth, improve gum health, battle plaque, and even go as far as preventing and curing tooth decay that occurs.

While the recipe that I came up with doesn’t burn or sting in any way and is 100% safe to swallow, I would not recommend doing it. I bet you can tell why just by looking at the ingredients list.

It isn’t the tastiest of things out there and may shock your system a little more than you would like to first thing in the day.

HOW TO MAKE IT:

2 cups water
1 packet green tea
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 tablespoon salt
6 mint leaves
6 sage leaves
2 tablespoon thyme

Heat up your water and pour into an air tight container, making sure the container has a wide mouth. Add in the green tea packet and allow it to steep for 3-5 minutes. Once finished, leave in the tea packet and add the remaining ingredients. Seal the container and allow the mouthwash to sit for 24 hours. After this time is up, strain out all of the liquid into another airtight container and seal the lid. Use as you would any normal mouthwash, swishing for 60 seconds before spitting.
