Every single person in the world goes through a Rough time every now and again. It can span years or only a week. I know I often mention my own difficulties and the struggles I overcame over the past couple of years but in this case, it doesn’t matter what the situation or struggle is. What truly matters is how a person handles it. Do you lock yourself away? Are you gracious? Are you mean? Do you lash out at others? When all is said and done it won’t matter what you went through but how you went through it.
I will admit that I was a difficult person to be around at times. I was solely invested in my own pain that I wasn’t even acknowledging what other people were going through at the same time. I was making their lives just as miserable as my own without ever meaning to. Even though I can see that clearly now, it was so difficult for me to see past myself then and in my mind, nothing could make the situation I was in easier. It can be an isolating experience and sometimes you may feel as though no other human being understands you.
After all, is said and done, I have begun to find ways to remind myself of how I was and how it can be to make sure that I never become like that again. No matter how difficult the struggle is.
I know this may sound very cliche, but during times like this, I have realized that looking at the right written words can help a lot. I am not talking about locking myself away and reading poetry by candle light at midnight. Any written words. Song lyrics. Movie lines. Books. Poetry. Even slogans have sometimes worked. Whatever it is, as long as it forces you to pause in your own self-wallowing and think, it is the perfect Quote. All it takes is that one line, those few right words, to make you think, I am going to be okay. I am going to make it through this.
“Don’t allow your past or present condition to control you. It’s just a process that you’re going through to get you to the next level.” –T.D. Jakes
“Sometimes the best thing you can do is not think, not wonder, not imagine, not obsess. Just breathe and have faith that everything will work out for the best.” –Robert Tew
“Eventually all things fall into place. Until then, laugh at the confusion, live for the moments, and know everything happens for a reason.” –Albert Schweitzer
“Often what may appear as a detour in life is actually the most direct and empowering path to your destination.” –James Arthur Ray
“If you worry about what might be, and wonder what might have been, you will ignore what is.” –Unknown
“Life is a shipwreck, but we must not forget to sing in the lifeboats.” -Voltaire
Out of this entire list, this quote by Voltaire is possibly the simplest and one of my favorite quotes of all time. I have kept it on a list of important quotes for a while now and it never doesn’t force me to think about where my life currently is, for better or worse. Unlike a lot of other quotes that I saw when I was struggling, this was the one that stood out. It doesn’t tell you to ignore your problems or just move past them. Life is one big massive problem. But we can’t let those few sour moments be all that we are known for and let them take over our lives. Even the worst of moments, we need to remember to love ourselves, not take life too seriously, and enjoy every moment we are given.
