A Chalky Driveway HIIT Workout

With gorgeous summer weather always comes that innate feeling that you need to be outside enjoying it. Especially since I live in Minnesota and never know when the weather will take a turn and plunge us into an eternal winter. Every year it ends up being the same pattern in that I plan to do all these fun different kinds of exercises, taking advantage of the beautiful outdoors, only to fall back on my usual patterns and ending up hidden away inside a weight room instead.

It’s simple. No minded. And basically a habit at this point.

I do enjoy running outside more so than on a treadmill, but even then I am simply letting the outdoors weather pass me by instead of using it to my full advantage and enjoying it.

However, working out outside does not need to be a punishment or routine in any way and can actually be one of the highlights your day. With the help of a little bit of Chalk and some pavement, you can get in a killer workout that seems more like a game than exercising.

Just don’t get sucked into the vortex of drawing with chalk. It is pretty easy to kill a couple of hours like that before you even know it.

Finding my Chalky Inspiration:

Even though it is a bit late, I ended up doing some spring-cleaning out in my garage this weekend.

Every time I do this I always end up playing around more than I do cleaning. It’s all because I get into a kid-like mentality as I find the toys and games that have been squirreled away behind boxes and tarps.

                    – Basketballs

                    – Hula Hoops

                    – Bubbles

                    – Chalk

The last is probably the most addicting thing for me. I could honestly spend all day out on our driveway, filling it up with different colors and patterns. It’s just one of those things I get sucked into. Not only was the box I found filled with new chalk, but it was an ultra mondo pack that we had bought a few months ago on a whim and simply forgot about.

If I were in kindergarten, this would definitely make me the coolest kid on the playground. Some of the chalk even has glitter.

Glitter chalk aside, I did cover a large portion of my driveway with random doodles before I knew it. As I was working, I switched between squatting, hopping, bending over, and crab walking my way across the driveway. After an hour passed, my legs were cramping and I was working up a sweat.

Who knew chalk drawing could be so intense.

I continued messing around and realized that the way I was moving was similar to several stretches and moves that I have done before in workouts. So I thought why not make it into an actual workout that I can share with all of you.

The Workout:

Before you even think about beginning the workout, you get to do the fun part. Drawing. Take your chalk and mark up three areas, like you see above, roughly 3 feet apart. The spacing should be done so you can comfortably stand with a foot on two of the spots without having to force yourself into the splits but still far enough apart that it is slightly unnatural.

You can even get your kids involved too. They can draw their own three spots or help you with your own. These can be anything from numbers to shapes to actual drawings. One of my friends even suggested writing down three words of things that have been causing you stress, so you can stomp them out as you work out.

Sounds like a pretty good plan to me.

Once you have your three spots drawn, set down your chalk and do a light warm up before you begin.

 Walking Push Ups x 30

Place your hands so one is on spot 1 and the other is on spot 2 with your feet placed so your body is perpendicular to the spots. Do a pushup and then walk your hands so that they are now on spot 2 and 3. Repeat this pattern until the set is complete

Side-to-Side Jump Squat x 30

Place your feet so one is on spot 1 and the other on spot 2. Squat down and push up in an explosive motion and jump to the side so that your feet land on spot 2 and 3 before squatting down again. Repeat the motion until the set is complete.

Plank x 30 sec

Place one hand in between spot 1 and 2 and the other in between spot 2 and 3. Get your body into a pushup position and hold for 30 seconds.

Twist Jumps x 30 sec

Stand on spot 2. Jump and twist your hips so that they face spot 1 while your chest remains forward. Jump and twist your hips to face spot 3. Repeat jumping and twisting until the set is complete.

Inverted Shoulder Press x 30

Place your hands on each side of spot 1 and your feet on each side of spot 3 in the downward dog position. Bend your arms as though you are doing a push-up. Hold for a few seconds before straitening your elbows and repeat.

Pendulum Lunges x 30

Stand with both feet on spot 2. Lunge forward to spot 1 with your left foot before stepping back to spot 2. Lunge backward to spot 3 with your left foot before stepping back. Repeat with your right leg. Continue alternating between your two legs before the sets are done.

Downward Dog Leg Pull x 30

Place your hands on each side of spot 1 and your feet on each side of spot 3 in the downward dog position. Stretch one of your legs out behind you so that it creates a straight line with your back before pulling it in and tucking it against your chest. Return your leg back into the air and repeat. Keep the leg the same but change it on the following set.

Speed Skaters x 30

Stand in between spot 1 and 2. Jump to the space between spot 2 and 3 landing on the foot closest to the outside, while crossing the other leg behind it and touching the space outside spot 3 while the hand closest to spot 3 touches spot 2. Repeat the process until the set is complete.

Repeat all sets 6 times
Someone else wanted to help mommy while she was drawing.

You can very easily create several different sets of dots and have your very own mini workout class with friends right on your driveway. Just blast some music and you are ready to go.

You can also set this up so that your kids can move along with you by making some of the moves a little bit simpler and easy for them to handle. Whether they want to join in or just play with the chalk around you, it is a great way to get everyone outside and enjoying the summer for as long as we have it.

So next time the weather is looking on the up and up, grab your bucket of chalk and head outside for a fun new workout. That will keep you feeling energized and excited about exercising instead of feeling drab about the same old boring routine.
