All of the Treats, None of The Tricks of a Vegan Halloween

I don’t know why out of all the months, my sweet tooth acts up the most during October. It might be the weather changing or that it officially is the “holiday season”, but it is frightening how much I need something sweet every day. And with Halloween sadly behind us, I have begun the delicious journey of eating all of the leftover Candy that has slowly been accumulated in my room over the course of this month. Now I love the accidently vegan list by PETA (and check out the candy section probably more than I should) but this month I was really determined to find a wider range of candies to satisfy my sweet tooth instead of the usual suspects. I managed to do this, and with surprising ease, but before I completely devour the candies that managed to survive this long, I thought it would be fun to share with all of you some of these different vegan candies that you don’t always hear about so you can satisfy your sweet tooth in new exciting ways too.

To start, Coconut is one of my favorite flavors to add to desserts, so it is no surprise that I have an entire section of candy dedicated to different treats featuring this taste. First off are Mahalo Bars, which are essentially a vegan Almond Joy bar but even better, and similarly the OCHO Coconut Bars, which mimics a Mounds bar. I discovered both of these over the summer and was instantly in love. Not only does the Mahalo bar nail the ‘milk’ Chocolate taste but both have the perfect balance of coconut to chocolate ratio and is so delicious and would please even the pickiest of candy eaters. Another pair of coconuts treats are these two Nutiva O’Coconut Organic Treats, in both the Hemp & Chia
and Classic versions. The only way to describe these two is as a ball of delicious sweet coconut with no chocolate. If you like eating more fun sized bars than these are more your style and they are perfect to buy a bag of and have laying around for a quick treat.

Once you get past my coconut obsession, I am just a chocolate lover at heart and was so happy at the amount of vegan chocolate choices my friends had this year. First is another amazing product from the Enjoy Life brand with their Boom Choco Boom Rice Milk Chocolate Bar. This is a brand that most vegans know about because of their awesome chocolate chips but sometimes people forget there are amazing chocolate bars as well. Another high quality combo that is always a great fall back is the combination of a nut butter and chocolate. Now Justin’s Peanut Butter Cupsare not really a hidden gem but they are not as wide spread as they should be. And they should be! But this time I also found EatingEvolved’s Dark Chocolate Coconut Butter Cups. Now I never knew coconut butter was a thing that existed but I needed it to be. The texture of the filling is slightly different from what I am used to but these are so good and I had to restrain myself from eating them all so I would have one for this post. Also another one that I discovered over the summer with the Mahalo bar is this Twilight bar by the same company and it tastes exactly like a Milkway, which was one of my all-time favorite candies, so if you are the same you need to get one of these as fast as you can.

One of the flavors that you get very use to after going vegan is the fruity flavors of candy because they are often easier to be ‘accidently’ vegan over their chocolate counterparts. But just because these options are more widespread doesn’t mean that all of the fruity flavor candies are vegan, and the ones that arent can be sorely missed. Luckily, on my candy hunt, I found a few new additions to my fruity candy memory bank. First off are Surf Sweets Organic Gummy Bears. I decided not to get the usual version and grabbed the sour ones instead and I was super happy having one of my favorite childhood treats back even though the sour is not the extremist sour. But another sour candy that was the ultimate sour and that I loved was Yumearth Sour Jelly Beans. Boy were these ‘pucker your lips’ sour. Wow! Definitely get this one but make sure not to eat the entire bag at ones. Last is Torie and Howard’s Chewie Fruities. These are super similar to starbursts but even better. I had never heard about them before but they are amazing and taste even juicer and fresher, if that makes sense, than the usual starbursts.

Last off are my randoms. I always have to have a section that doesn’t really fit with the rest. Now I know Coconut Secret’s bar could technically be considered more of a ‘bar’ bar instead of a candy bar, but it is so sweet and I have actually bought it several times to satiate my sweet tooth that there is no way I can call this anything besides candy. As it says on the bars label it is basically a coconut macaroon but in bar form which is absolutely delicious, especially on top of banana nice cream. Yum! And last of is Bixby & Co. bars. I have never seen these bars around before but man are they dense little guys. I bought both the Heart’s Delight and Whippersnapper bars, which first off, great names, but they had so much flavor and stuff in them that it wasn’t hard to see how they filled me up so fast. But both were super different from anything I have tried before and absolutely amazing. But what about you all? What are your favorite candies to have in October (vegan or non-vegan)? Are you as much of a sweet tooth fiend as I am or are you more into the savory flavors that come with the change in weather?
