Mango Mania @ Farzi Cafe

Farzi Cafe needs no introduction as their concept of Indian cuisine with a modern twist is well known and appreciated in Bangalore.

Summer being synonymous with mangos, Farzi Cafe was not far behind in curating a Mango based menu for food lovers in Bangalore to feast on.

I landed up visiting on a weekday afternoon with my mother in tow. I was not expecting a crowd since it was bang in the centre of the week but it seems like the office crowd in UB City are regular patrons of this establishment.

The ambience is classy and comfortable though I would assume it would be quite warm on a bright and sunny day. I was lucky as I visited on a gloomy yet pleasant afternoon and I am sure the place has a better feel after sunset.

The Mango Mania menu has something in it for everyone from the use of raw mangoes to the ripe varieties in their Cocktails, Salads, Starters, Main course and Desserts.

As is custom we started by ordering from their Mango cocktails menu with our order being the Mangosutra and Mangorita. The Mangosutra was a concotion of Vodka with red wine and passion fruit and this turned out to be a very innovative and enjoyable drink. My drink was the Mangorita was tequila shaken with mango marmalade and mango chutney served with a iced popsicle.

To begin our food journey we started with Green Mango and Papaya Salad served with peanut and imli chutney was light and refreshing enough.

Another interesting dish we got to taste was the Roasted Fish Tacos and not being a Taco person, I could just give it a bite, though my mom did like the stuffing and the mango salsa added that extra zing to the dish.

An array of starters followed – Ghee Podi Idlis with Raw Mango and Cashewnut Masala, Tandoori River Sole with Kacchi Ambi ki Chutney and Spiced Chicken Meatballs with Raw Mango and Cheese Core. Idlis have a special corner in my heart and this dish reminded me of those good old days. I would never expected an establishment of this stature to serve food so simple!

The Tandoori River sole was a delightful dish marinated perfectly with the fish cooked to perfection. You cannot just have a plate, I warn you!

The Spiced Chicken Meatballs with its filling of mango and cheese though a bit too heavy was also quite delicious.

Farzi Cafe has gone for some interesting dishes as part of their Mango food festival and we decided on the Andhra Fish Curry with Raw Mango served with light flavourful coconut rice. I love Andhra cuisine but was quite surprised when served with a dry Fish atop the coconut rice. Luckily enough a separate dish with a curry was served with it and I must say that gravy was the showstopper in the dish.

My mom opted for the Paneer Pepper Fry served with Malabar Parotha and Tomato and Mango curry. I have made many pepper paneer dishes and this one stands out in presentation as well as use of pepper with onions in the right proportions. Though I did not like the accompanying gravy this dish could be eaten just with the paneer pepper fry.

We ended our meal with excellently plated Vanilla pod Cheesecake with Kesari Aam Ras and Baileys Lollypop.

Though not my first visit to Farzi Cafe, second time turned out to be quite interesting and for those of you who love anything to do with mangoes do visit them before the Mango Mania food festival ends.
