Indulge Your Sweet Cravings @ Bhartiya Jalpan

A name like Bhartiya Jalpan does make you stop and wonder what kind of shop or establishment it is. That’s precisely what I thought when I saw a large bungalow on 100 ft Road Indira Nagar under renovation. A great location is the first step towards catching one’s attention and these guys know it. Though they have been around in since 1945 in Guwahati, this is their debut into South India and I cant help but think that Bangalore is a great choice.

Luckily enough a few friends had popped in for a visit and I came to know that it is an sweet shop also serving chaats and lunch thalis. Bangalore does have its share of such places however it is badly needed in a popular dining area such as Indira Nagar.

After many days of passing by this place, I finally made it with a group of friends on a fine Saturday evening with an intention of trying their chaats in particular.

The house I mentioned is a large old styled bungalow where every room is massive and they have used this to their advantage while doing up the interiors. There is an outer area which is solely for chaat preparation including serving pani puri’s.

There are a few tables outside for those who would like to enjoy the weather. The interiors are bright and rich something which is the norm for sweet shops from my experience. The varieties of sweets are displayed at the entrance enticing sweet lovers to give in to their cravings.

There is a separate area inside where the thalis are served during lunch hours. Another section houses the various types of Dry Fruits and nuts.

They also offer to make special boxes of these dry fruits and nuts for gifting purposes.

Some of the chats I tried were Pani Puri, Dahi Bhalla, Dahi Puri,  Papdi Chaat, Sev Puri, Aloo Tikki, Chola Bhatura, Pav Bhaji, Raj kachori and Katori chaat.

The Puri’s used vary from palak to beetroot and served with 4 different kinds of pani.

Though we ordered many chaats, there were a few hits and misses and my choice for an evening snack were the Pani Puri and Chola Bhatura.

In summer, a must order is the buttermilk and we did just that. Others drinks I tried were the Badam milk and Lassi.

There was no way, we were leaving without trying some of their sweets and thanks to some of my sweet tooth buddies, I got to try these sweets – Malai Chamcham, Mini Gulab Jamoon, Malpua, Rasmalai, Rasagulla, Gulab jamun, Malai Batti, Gur Sandesh, Kesar Mysore pak, Dilkhus , Kaju pista roll , Kaju anjeer (sugarless) and Jalebi.

In addition, they also serve traditional North Indian breakfasts which I heard are quite lip smacking.

A very grand and fancy looking sweet shop in a great location. A definite stop for to indulge your sweet cravings for indian sweets and certain special sweets such as Jaggery Sandesh which is available only 2 months in a year.
