Mr Holmes Bakehouse | Sweet and Savoury Donuts and Cruffins

One would know Mr Holmes Bakehouse, the cruffin makers originally from San Fancisco, California, by their neon sign “I got baked in San Francisco”.  But just outside its only store in the world, now in Singapore, you see a customized sign “I got baked in Singapore”.  In its signature pink and white hues, the folks behind Mr Holmes Bakehouse are charging ahead with a fully revamped menu, containing both sweet and savoury options (yes, a first-ever savoury cruffin).

If there is only one savoury item – although I don’t know why that would be the case – you want to try at Mr Holmes Bakehouse, it would have to be this Sundried Tomato & Bacon Jam Cruffin ($7.50).  Don’t be deceived by it’s not-so-aesthetic outlook.  Deviating from the usual sweet cruffins that you see around, bits of gruyere are incorporated into the dough to create crispy cheese skirts when baked.  Each cruffin comes with a sundried tomato and chive cream cheese centre with delightful bacon jam and finished off with a drizzle of balsamic glaze.  We love the bacon jam; slightly candied, with the fragrance that the bacon brings about.
Mr Holmes Bakehouse also has a savoury donut in its line-up this time, the Everything Donut ($5.80).  Sounds promising?  This fried brioche comes piped with chive and caper cream cheese then glazed with Sriracha honey and a count of house-made sauce.  As with many of the items on its menu, you can expect rather generous fillings so we do recommend sharing this with friends so you get to try more flavours.
For those with a sweet tooth, you can try the Speculoos Donut ($5.80).  No need for introduction to this Biscoff spread and cookie.  Be warned that this is highly indulgent and on the sweeter side so good to share or if you feel like a sweet treat, then go for this.
Our favourite sweet for the day has to be the Pistachio Mixed Berry Croissant ($6.50).  Twice-baked, this croissant has an added crunch and is draped in a nutty pistachio frangipane that is piped and drizzled with mixed berry jam (consisting of strawberries, raspberries and blueberries) and finished with brushes of rum syrup – the latter being very subtle.
If you are looking for a gift for friends and family, or simply cannot make up your mind as to what flavours to get, you can consider the Monthly Box of Six ($35) where you get to sample a collection of three cruffins, three donuts with a monthly switch of weekend exclusives.  For this month, the box is retailing at $39.90 as the weekend exclusive is a collaboration with Park Bench Deli and you get to try the PBJ by PBD Cruffin. Think tart strawberry rhubarb jam with nutty almond butter filling.

Mr Holmes Bakehouse is available at the ground floor of Pacific Plaza and it is their only outlet in the world.
