The Communal Place | New Miso-Centric Dishes in Joo Chiat

Introducing an array of new-miso-centric dishes, The Communal Place places a large focus on their Japanese-Western fusion meals and aims to be a place where you can gather with family and friends to drink and gossip over good food.  Since it opened its doors in 2018, it has been quite a mainstay to the café scene for the residents nearby, so you can check this place out when you embark on your next East Coast journey.

Upon our arrival, we were treated to a welcome drink, which is a mocktail of daily fruit infused mix, soda and pomelo pulp – very refreshing for Singapore’s weather.  Thereafter, we ordered some fresh oysters (S$19 for 6, S$35 for 12) to start.  They were briny and we were told that they are popular with diners there especially those who come in for quick drinks with friends.
We also tried their Burrata Salad (S$18) which features mozzarella burrata, smoked salmon, mesclun salad topped off with balsamic glaze.  The creaminess from the burrata was a surprise pairing with the salty smoked salmon, but we enjoyed this starter.
We would recommend ordering their Fish Taco (S$14 for 2) – you get crisp beer-battered dory that has a nice golden exterior and flaky interior, coleslaw, salsa and chipotle mayo.
Moving on to the mains, we had the Foie Gras Miso Linguine (S$23).  You get a linguine in miso cream sauce with bacon, seared foie gras and capelin roe.  We were initially hesitant to order this dish because it sounded a little too creamy / ”jelak” for our liking.  Boy we were glad we did because of its uniqueness.  It cuts through the richness of the foie gras and lends a sweet-savoury flavour to the dish.  This is a must-try when you visit The Communal Place.
Another main that we were recommended was the Miso Salmon (S$21).  Pan-seared salmon sits atop potato mash with glazed vegetables and pickled beetroot served on the side.  The Salmon is also coated with a thin layer of sweet miso which elevates the dish with the umami flavour.  Our only gripe was that the salmon was a tad too cooked and we would have preferred it to be slightly pinker and tender.
Onto the desserts, we had the Miso Pancake (S$17), which we thought was the best thing that we tried.  Think thick pancakes, topped with fruits, cookies, crumbles and the selling point is the miso syrup.  We could taste hints of maple syrup in there and the miso adds a new dimension.  We will return for them!

The Katong / Joo Chiat enclave is definitely heating up with a huge array of dining choices available.
