Why You’ll Love Creamy Garlic Mushrooms

  • Mushrooms are one of the most super superfoods. Mushrooms are a superfood that boast immense flavor in addition to the nutrients and vitamins that your body needs. They are naturally gluten-free and cholesterol-free, and packed with rich essential nutrients and are great for your brain health, bone health, and immune system. They can also aid in weight loss and boast anti-aging properties.
  • Garlicky and creamy. What more is there to say? A creamy, garlicky sauce pairs well with almost anything, and mushrooms are no exception. The savory, earthy taste of brown mushrooms goes so great with the creamy sauce that this side dish could even make a meal of its own. Seriously, serve it with a side of fresh bread and you will see just how fast it disappears.
  • It’s fast and easy without sacrificing flavor. Ready in under 15 minutes, these creamy garlic mushrooms bring phenomenal taste to the table with little effort. It’s the best of both worlds.

Ingredients and Substitutions

To make these quick and easy Creamy Garlic mushrooms, you will need the following ingredients:

  • brown mushrooms - I halved them, but you can easily slice or keep the whole. You may need to slightly adjust the cook time depending on how you prepare the mushrooms (a little less time if sliced, a little longer time if served whole).
  • olive oil
  • salt and pepper
  • butter
  • garlic - lots of garlic please!
  • all-purpose flour - thickens up that delicious creamy sauce.
  • heavy cream - or half and half cream.
  • fresh parsley
  • Parmesan cheese - adds incredible flavor and also helps to thicken up the sauce.

Additions and Substitutions: If you want to spice things up, consider adding a dash of red chili flakes or some cooked, chopped bacon. If you add bacon, you should omit the salt and then salt to taste after cooking.

You will also need measuring cups and spoons and a skillet or shallow saucepan.

How to Make the Best Creamy Garlic Mushrooms

  1. Sauté the mushrooms. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat for 2 minutes until the hot oil sizzles. Add mushrooms and season with salt and pepper. Sauté for 5-7 minutes until nicely browned on all sides.
  2. Make the sauce. Add butter, garlic and flour. Stir well for 1 minute until fragrant and well combined. Add heavy cream, parsley and Parmesan cheese. Stir well and bring the sauce to a simmer. Reduce heat to medium and keep stirring until thickened to a desired consistency.
  3. Serve. Stir in extra pepper and cheese, if desired. Serve over pasta, mashed potatoes, risotto, or rice.

Recipe Tips and Tricks

  • How to clean mushrooms: When bringing your mushrooms home from the grocery store, they will probably have some dirt on them. The best way to clean them is to wipe them with a damp paper towel one at a time before rinsing them with cold water. Never soak mushrooms since they will absorb water like a sponge.
  • How to store: Store leftover creamy garlic mushrooms in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
  • How to reheat: Reheat in a skillet over medium-low heat until warmed through, about 5 minutes. If the sauce has thickened up too much in the refrigerator, then add a splash of water until desired consistency is reached.
