Step away from the turkey… Christmas 2017 is all about rum, reggae and jerk, as Turtle Bay launches their first ever festive menu!!
Turtle Bay have been bringing a brand new, blissful Caribbean dining and drinking experience to the people of Exeter for just over a year. It has proved insanely popular with tables in high demand ever since opening. One of my favourite things about the restaurant is the great atmosphere and friendly staff. There is an all round good vibe from the minute you walk in, to the colourful Caribbean decor to the Reggae rhythms playing in the background.
SPF was invited to try out the Christmas menu for ourselves, and the menu we tried is an amazing 4 courses for only £24!
We got stuck straight in on the raspberry reggae!
When we arrived we were given some appetisers:
Garlic 'n' Herb Flatbread
Hand formed stone baked flatbread, topped with fresh rocket, crushed chilli & garlic butter, TRINI
Baked spiced chickpeas dusted with thyme & spice and
Spicy Pork Rinds
Served with jerk BBQ Sauce
The garlic bread was really delicious, and the chilli wasn't overpowering at all, and was more of an after bite. The chickpeas were soft and full of flavour, I really enjoyed them. The jerk BBQ sauce was amazing, rich and smokey, compliment to the pork rinds. This was a perfect selection of appetisers!
Our starters were:
24 hour spiced & marinated chicken wings, pit grilled and tossed with a sweet mango chilli & coriander glaze. Served with fresh herbs
Slow roasted shredded duck, with sweet onion, soy sauce & chilli, stuffed in toasted rolled flatbread, served with sour orange chutney
The starters were the perfect portion size and full of flavour. The duck was succulent, rich and was complemented perfectly with the chutney. The wings were also succulent and full of flavour, and the glaze was super aromatic. Both starters were thoroughly enjoyed!!
The main courses were:
Marinated goat meat, slowly braised & cooked in our house blend of curry spices, scotch bonnet, citrus juice & fresh ginger. Served with onion chutney, fresh herbs, coconut rice ‘n’ peas & Johnnycakes
Tomahawk Cut Pork Chop
Marinated with cinnamon allspice & thyme. Pit grilled & served with spiced fries & pineapple chow
I have never actually tried curried goat before, and have always assumed that goat would be quite tough. This curried goat was melt in the mouth good, and full of aromatic spices and flavours! The Johnny Cake is a cornmeal flatbread, and tasted almost like fried dumplings. They were really tasty and a great addition to the dish overall. The pork was tender and full of flavour, and the cinnamon and allspice flavours shone through.
Our puddings were:
Sticky Black Treacle Pudding
Banana & Toffee Cheesecake
Triple layered cheesecake with crispy biscuit base, creamy soft cheese, banana & toffee
2 bowls of heaven!! The Cheesecake was delicious and the sauce was to die for! Can't say I have had a sauce on my cheesecake before, it was rich and divine and I would definitely have it again!
I was slightly disappointed that I couldn't taste the salted caramel int he treacle sponge, being such a lover of salted caramel, but the flavours were still delicious and were the perfect taste for after dinner. The ice cream took away the richness of the caramel to make he perfect mouthful.
We loved our Caribbean Christmas experience, and can't wait to go back for the non-festive food too! The menu we tried is for a minimum of 8 people, and requires booking in advance.
