Falafel Omisi, Yokine

PERTH | There’s a new Falafel cafe in Perth, and you won’t stumble across it unless you know where to look. It’s the Perth branch of Israel’s popular Falafel Omisi. To find it, head to the club sheds at Joe Rosen Oval, just up from the car park to the right.

The space is tiny, a few seats inside and out, with the kitchen and counter to the rear. It’s run by co-owner and chef Maor Mantin, who left the world of finance to bring the Omisi concept to Perth in partnership with Yaakov Omisi, who owns the family chain in Israel.

The menu is simple. A handful plates, pitas, and a few other things, centred primarily around Yaakov’s Yemenite Jewish grandmother’s recipe, fried to order, falafel. I tried a few things when I visited, and was impressed by it all. The flavours, freshness, and lightness all come together wonderfully. It’s simple food done right.

The falafel plate is a great option. A range of fresh salads, crisp falafel, hummus, tahina, chips, and two pitas pockets served DIY style on a plate. The hummus drizzled with tahina and olive oil, served on a plate with sautéed mushrooms, onions and a pita pocket, is one of Maor’s favourite things on the menu, and is well worth trying as well.

For something less common (in Perth that is), try the Malawach wrap. Malawach is a pastry/flatbread that’s popular in Yemenite Jewish cuisine. The wrap at Omisi is made to order and filled with hummus, eggplant, a hard-boiled egg, fresh tomato salsa (made with zesty lemon juice and garlic), and your choice of fresh salads. Textually and flavour wise, it’s an exciting dish.

Everything is available for dine in and take away, and there’s are take away tubs of hummus available to take home.
