MELBOURNE | When experienced barista Ryan Dewantara opened his first Coffee spot, Warung Coffee, early last year, his focus was on offering customers some of the best coffee in Melbourne.

A year in, and Ryan has very much succeeded. I was invited in to see what Ryan and the team were doing at the cafe, and while waiting for my coffee and food, there was a constant stream of locals heading to the take away window for coffee, with the staff knowing all of their orders without even having to ask. There’s a real community vibe here, that suits the small, cozy space.

The coffee window is the main focus for take away, but you can also head inside for your takeaway or to enjoy your coffee in. There’s a few seats and tables inside – the cafe part takes up about half of the space, with a retail section containing few aisles of Indonesian pantry goods making up the other half.

There’s a full selection of filter and espresso based coffee on offer, along with things like matcha and hojicha lattes, and Indonesian-style palm sugar coffee. Five Senses beans are used, and you can purchase bags of beans to take home.

Along with coffee, Warung Coffee offers a small selection of daily baked pastries, along with a few dishes that incorporate elements of his Indonesian heritage. The Indomie toastie is a must try. It contains two slices of white bread, toasted with a filling of Indomie noodles, cheese, and a gooey fried egg. There’s also a beef rendang toastie, a few non-Indonesian options like ham and cheese, and some meal options like beef rendang and nasi lemak.
