Amarula Ethiopian Cold Brew Martini: Recipe

RECIPES | I first tried Amarula back in 2009. I was living in London and one of my South African work colleagues almost fell off his seat when I told him that I’d not heard of it before. Needless to say after work that day it was down to the pub for an Amarula.

Since that day, I’ve enjoyed the South African cream liqueur many times. It’s made from sugar, cream and the fruit of the African marula tree which is also locally called the Elephant tree or the Marriage Tree. It has a unique, caramel like taste. Most recently I introduced some friends to Amarula while waiting for a flight to Zambia at the Kigali International Airport lounge.

Owners Distell launched a new flavour, Amarula Ethiopian Coffee, at the 2020 Virtual Travel Expo. It’s exclusive to global travel retail through Big Five Duty Free, Heinemann and Dufry, and available in wholesale locations, from January 2021. A global travel retail and domestic roll-out of the product will follow in March 2021.

As part of the expo, I collaborated with Distell to design a cocktail highlighting the unique taste of Amarula and Ethiopian coffee. I’m well acquainted with the coffee from Yirgacheffe in Ethiopia – it’s where some of my favourite single origin beans that I use for my morning coffee are from. I therefore decided to create an Amarula Ethiopian Cold Brew Martini.

Preparation Time: 10 minutes / Cooking time: n/a / Serves: 1

Ingredients

  • 30ml Amarula Ethiopian Coffee Liqueur
  • 30ml vodka
  • 30ml Ethiopian cold brew coffee
  • pinch smoked salt
  • 1 marshmallow

Method

  1. Put the Amarula Ethiopian Coffee Liqueur, vodka, and coffee, into a cocktail shaker with ice cubes. Shake well.
  2. Strain into a glass.
  3. Put the marshmallow onto a drink swizzler/skewer. Toast the marshmallow, and place the skewer on the top of the glass.
  4. Sprinkle with salt.

Notes

The key is to use a light, or medium-bodied coffee with strong floral notes, to compliment the coffee in the Amarula Ethiopian Coffee Liqueur.
