MELBOURNE| Shanklin Cafe in Hawthorn East is a cute little cafe that’s housed in a renovated Victorian era terraced home that was named “Shanklin” when it was first built. Brothers Francis and Johnny Chehade, and their friend Aboudy Yaacoub have made the most of the small space, with a courtyard out the front giving way to a wood panelled interior with a bit of a Nordic cabin feel about it.
The menu at Shanklin is all about simple food and consistency. There’s no particular cuisine or trend on show here – just quality ingredients and honest food. The Nutella stuffed pancakes with strawberries, grilled banana, Oreo crumbles and vanilla ice-cream are a crowd favourite, as are the sweet corn fritters served with guacamole salsa, coriander and yoghurt. If you’re really hungry, try the Shanlin Breakfast which comes with with two eggs your way, bacon, chorizo, spinach, mushrooms, grilled tomato, potato rosti & grilled halloumi. You won’t be hungry by the end of it.
The entire menu is available all day, so lunch for breakfast and breakfast for lunch can totally be a thing if you want it to be, and there’s a pastry cabinet filled with pastries, foccacias and sweets.
Coffee here is fantastic, with a Synesso Hydra pumping out some fantastic espresso based drinks along with V60 pourover, cold drip and more. Pretty much any brewing method you can think of is on offer here along with all the alternative lattes you could want – matcha, chai, tumeric etc. There’s teas, mocktails, smoothies and shakes, and for those looking for something boozy, a small selection of mostly local wines. Beer is the only real let down on the drinks menu, with only three lager/pilsners, two of them Peroni, on offer.
Service is friendly and attentive, and there’s a great local’s feel about the place, with people from all walks of life enjoying themselves. If you want the next big thing in brunch or fancy food, Shanklin isn’t the place for you, but if you want tasty food that’s consistent and hits the spot, you’ll be very happy at Shanklin.
