MELBOURNE | Horn Please Fitzroy North is one of our favourite Indian restaurants in Melbourne, with a focus on lighter Indian dishes made using quality local ingredients, organic where possible. Beef is from Bendigo, potatoes from Trentham, chicken from Bannockburn, and lamb the Macedon Ranges.

The space is vibrant, but not too noisy, adorned with Indian studio portraits, Hindi proverbs, and a screen showing Indian music clips and Bollywood films. It’s fun but never over the top. The menu skews towards Northern Indian cuisine – former owners Jessi and Jennifer Singh created an assortment of street food options and larger plates and current owner/head chef Amar Singh hasn’t played too much with the winning formula.

The street food items are the most interesting things on the menu. Try the Murgh Shatavari Kabab – minced chicken in a medley of spices on Asparagus Skewer and charred in Tandoor, and the Papadi Chaat, a sort of Indian version of nachos & salsa. For curry, the butter chicken is one of our favourite versions of the classic in Melbourne, but do try the Paneer Malai Masala – Tandoor charred house made paneer cheese in a curry of cream, tomato masala. With a serve of the buttery, soft, charred garlic naan the curries here are heavenly. For those with a sweet tooth, the Gulab Jamun, Indian donuts made of soft cheese & sweet syrup, are the way to go.

If you’re thirsty, there’s a decent wine list featuring wines sourced mostly from the Macedon ranges, along with a beer fridge stocked full of mostly local craft beers. You help yourself to what you want from the beer fridge and keep your bottle caps so the staff know what you’ve had. It’s an honesty system that’s worked at the restaurant for several years.

All of the above combined with friendly service make Horn Please a consistent winner in our books when we’re in the mood for Indian food.
